I'm adding an "88" to my later war waffen SS force for bolt action, but I'm not sure how to paint the 88 crew uniforms. Were these guns ever manned by the SS in their regular camo smocks etc, or were they detachments from luftwaffe and uniformed differently? At first glance the crew provided with the gun just look like regular heer.

I thinks is more interesting that you paint them as a Luftwaffe crew (in blue) detached in support of your Heer or SS troops…IF you really cannot afford to paint German without cammo smock..you can consider that for example Herman Goering Luftwaffe Div. was even provided with best cammo suits so you can show yur crew with a mixed blue/cammo look.

They can be any of the above. They could belong to the organic SS divisional flak battalion, or an army-level Army flak battalion or a unit from a Luftwaffe flak corps. So pick whatever you want to paint.

The 88s in panzer divisions were manned by Heer (army) or SS troops, as the rest of the division -- not by the LW.

Don, indeed, but LW flak batteries could occasionally be attached, or simply find themselves in the same area of operations, as in Goodwood.

In answer to the OP, yes, 88s in SS units were sometimes crewed by troops in SS uniforms, which may or may not include camo.

If the figures aren't sculpted with smocks etc you could just do them in feldgrau SS uniforms, and maybe mix in a bit of dot 44 which was a similar cut to the wool uniforms.

Depends how generic you want to make them really. LW would be the most generic, but Luftwaffe crews would most like be in Fleigerbluse, not M40/42 jackets.

JF: true, but the poster seemed to want to make them SS, if possible.
