Excellent Druzhina. i suggest that these chaps are very like the illustrations of Turks, Byzantines and Syrians. Their costume is rather basic, but it is consistently the baida style helmet and shirt of lamellar, mail or scale. . |

Very interesting shield on the Vardizia monastery picture that it links to. It is very like a shield that is IIRC in the Skylitzes manuscript and is illustrated as perhaps an officer's shield in Oman's Art if War in the Middle Ages. I had always wondered if there was some artistic error in the Skylitzes illustration, but this one from the monastery rather confirms it. |

Is khud just Persian for helmet? link |

Kulah khud is a Persian term I have seen for helmet, where kulah means hat. Nicolle uses a number of terms to distinguish types of helmets. The Sasanian Helmet in the CAIS article he calls a Bayḍah. He also uses tark & rabi'ah. Druzhina Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |

OK, got off my chair to go into the study and look it up in Oman. The illustration is from the Psalter of Theodore of Caesarea which was , at least when Oman cited it, in the British Museum and dates to around 1066 Only for you Druzhins |

Thanks Lewisgunner, I found Oman's plate at google.books (a drawing). It would have been nice if he gave the folio. I will put it on my list to look through the manuscript of the Psalter of Theodore of Caesarea (now at the British Library). Druzhina 11th Century Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |
