Howdy,

Friday evening, November 7th, 2014 the sound of cannon and muskets was on again heard on the Kernstown battlefield.

Jackson misled by Ashby's recon attack what he believes in a numerically inferior force. In fact, Shield's outnumbers Jackson by more than 2:1.

The game was played using Volley & Bayonet using the Battalion scale; units were regiments and batteries. Game map and photos below; there were four players.

The morale levels and training were randomly determined for each regiment. All Confederates were armed with muskets. Most Union troops had rifled muskets. However, Union regiments designated as poorly-trained troops or as militia were deemed to be armed with muskets.

Ashby & Kimball opened the battle with an exchange of artillery fire. The seccessionists initially had the upper hand wrecking the 1st Ohio Light Artillery. The surviving Union guns replied to the detriment of Chew's Battery. The opening bombardments lasting several turns.

Fulkerson initially deploy to the east of Ashby, and awaited the arrival of additional forces. As Garnett's Stonewall Brigade arrived, the Confederates advance on the Union left.

Sullivan marching to the sound of the guns deployed to block the Confederate attack. Fighting was very hot. Burk's Brigade arrived to bolster the Confederate right flank. Meanwhile Tyler's Brigade was tardy in its arrival. The Confederate attack broke Sullivan's Brigade position, but with evening approaching the fighting then died down.

For the Union, Kimball and Sullivan were exhausted. While for the Confederates, Garnett and Fulkerson were also exhausted. No morale collapses. With boths sides having two brigades exhausted the game ended in a draw.

The players seemed to enjoy the game. And so, the game was deemed a success.

Ponder on,
