just came across some b/w pictures showing m110 howitzer with environmental shelter over the gun/crew station
to protect from bad weather
what I want to know is did they fire the gun with this shelter up or did they remove it before firing gun

Was a gun bunny on the M-107 175mm for my tour in ' Nam
Never saw it
It would be blown about during firing I would think
Also it would interfere with the loading cradle
And SOP was not to ride on the gun when firing except for the AG and Gunner

Commanded an 8" battery in Desert Storm out of Sill.
Generally no, reason being that it was pretty much SOP to displace after a fire mission or 2 at most. Driving down the road with those shelters up meant leaving some on the roadside and or tearing them.
They were essentially 3 walls and became sails once the gun started moving any speed.

I was a gun bunny in a M110A2 unit in the mid-'80's in Germany. It wasn't much of a shelter being a tarp and didn't really work for Bleeped text. Except in the motorpool, I recall the sides always being rolled up. A sheet or two of 4'x8' plywood was placed on top of the frame which was used as a platform to store the camouflage net when rolled up.
