I've seen the previous movies, also LOTR ofcourse, but think Mr. Jacksons versions of the stories are too far away from the Originals. I will watch the third Hobbit movie, but I got a different vision of it when I read the books. But hey, who reads books in these days, except old "bleeps" like me! |

I read the Hobbit on holiday this year, only the second time since I was 14, I'm 51 now. These films, although entertaining, are only "based" on the book as I think we all know. The book is utterly charming and far more rewarding than watching 8 hours of cgi "fantasy". I beg those of you who have not read Tolkien to read his timeless classics….even if only on a Kindle thingamajig! |

it could be far far worse Bakshi or Rankin-Bass could have done it its no worse than James Bond book inspired movies or Dune or Harry Potter or Battle of the Bulge with modern tanks or westerns that have Colt peacemaker or Remington repeating rifles years before they were made |

it could be far far worse Bakshi or Rankin-Bass could have done it Bakshi was a lazy attempt. Psychedelic background fighting underneath some pretty nice animation. As a kid, I thought it was "meh". As an adult, I think it is "meh". The Rankin and Bass version at least comes pretty close to the story. It is a kids cartoon. I loved it as a kid. My son loved it as a kid. Oh yeah. And one more thing. The book is written for kids! So like it or not, Rakin and Bass nailed it…in about an hour. I watched the first movie and lost interest toward the end. I have not seen the other two but may catch them…eventually…on Netflix or something. Like waaslandwarrior says. The movies just stray too far from the story. And like Mark RedLinePS says, far better to read the book and get your own image of what the story is all about. Too much CGI and high frame rate makes the movies look so unnatural. Way too overdone. |

I'm enjoying the movies well enough (and will go see this one too) but nothing like as much as I enjoyed the LOTR movies. The success of the LOTR trilogy was a legitimate EVENT that took everyone by surprise; although at least one Hobbit movie was inevitable following that, what we ended up with really is a greedy cash grab to milk the source for all it's worth. |

True but the Battle should be interesting. Just don't bet on the Orcs. |

While I've seen the first two in theatres (and will see the third in theatres), I've found they are much better watching on DVD in 90 minute chunks per night. I think part of this is my bladder isn't fighting for my attention in the third hour of the movie, but it's also more easily digestible and I can appreciate the quieter moments in the movie. Still think the half hour of dodging Smaug was a bit much at the end of II though. Having said that, they are still far from what I pictured in my mind when I read the book. But I don't mind having the movies as an option. |

The problem is that all these adaptations have too much way over the top Jackson and not enough Tolkien. |
