Navy SEAL Author Files $8 USDM Lawsuit Against Attorney (11/05/2014) A Navy SEAL who has been ordered to pay $4.5 USD million to the federal government for writing a book documenting the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden has filed a lawsuit against the attorney who advised him. The plaintiff published the book without first clearing it with the federal government and must now pay $4.5 USD million for releasing details of the event. He contends in the lawsuit against his attorney that he was told he did not have to clear the manuscript with the Department of Defense before publishing. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, N.Y., alleges that the plaintiff's attorney told him he had government clearance to review the manuscript. The lawsuit seeks $8 USD million in compensation from the plaintiff's attorney. – Stephen Rex Brown, New York Daily News New York Daily News: link |

Coincidentally, the new navy SEAL induction test has just been unveiled; in 48 hours with no sleep, candidates have to march 100 miles, score 99% accuracy on the shooting range, climb a 6,000 foot peak, and secure a publishing deal…. |

Agreed. When I retired in 2000 my out briefing was extremely specific and lasted just over 2 hours. It was clear what I could and could not discuss and or write about. I signed documents to that effect. "He contends in the lawsuit against his attorney that he was told he did not have to clear the manuscript with the Department of Defense before publishing". Well, he can contend that but given his position I find it extremely hard to believe that he himself was unaware that clearance was required. Regards, J. P. Kelly |

Well, he can contend that but given his position I find it extremely hard to believe that he himself was unaware that clearance was required. He is NOT contending that he didn't know clearance was required. He IS contending that his lawyer told him that he (the lawyer) was able to give clearance to publish.
…the plaintiff's attorney told him he had government clearance to review the manuscript. |

Wow, makes me wonder how much our CIC and Panetta, amongst others should have to pay for outing secrets about the raid? Perhaps 10X to 20X that? Of course, that's what they SHOULD have to, but we all know they'll get off without paying a penny, since those with the right connections never suffer adverse repercussions. |
