What range of Calpe Miniatures should I use for this regiment? Would the Dragoons work or did the Regiment have long coats and Lances, in which case I should use a Landwher code? Any help would be great. Thanks Chris |

Knoetel seems to offer both as uniform possibilities. Brass shoulder boards for "elites," but they probably also wore the litewka (sp?)at times/ GdeP

Hi, Now that's an interesting question! The links below may well help: link link I would be interested as to how this progresses as I've got some more Prussian Landwehr cavalry to paint. Cheers, Paul |

I've painted up 5 regiments of Calpe Landwehr cavalry, however I used the British Shako figures so that our group could easily identify them from Uhlans. |

If the regiment conforms to common Prussian practice the Elite figure represents men who were rich enough to equip themselves and formed what evolved into a small Volunteer Mounted Jaeger squadron that provided the regiment with skirmishers and scouts, sometimes armed with rifled carbines. The reiter would represent the bulk of the regiment. |

Hi Chris, I've done a little more digging and although I suppose there will be other sources I've used David Nash's "The Prussian Army" 1808-1815 published by Almark a very long time ago i.e. 1972! The good news is that is does say unequivocally that they were dressed in green and as Uhlans. Now the trouble is that Calpe Uhlans don't have the right horse furniture. Also, they don't have scale epaulets for the elite squadron. The Volunteer Uhlans do have scale epaulets but still don't have the right horse furniture and have lances instead of swords. Probably of even more significance is the fact that the Pomeranian National Cavalry Regiment didn't have lances. So maybe use Calpe Dragoons? On the very much plus side these have the right horse furniture and from the Knotel plate the litewka would be OK for the other three squadrons but maybe not OK for the elites. Another irritant is that they should all have carbines and only one of the Calpe Dragoon figures does: link see PCD13. A picture of my Dragoons here: link A picture of my Volunteer Jager here: link If I was to do these, I would go for Dragoons and just accept that there will be missing carbines in all or some. Maybe there's someone clever enough out there to do some conversions?! Very interested to hear how you get on. Cheers, Paul |

Lovely work Paul! That's a lot of figures, big battalions and regiments. I see some Perry artillery and Foundry(?) Cuirassier's. Thanks for letting us see them. |

Thanks for the kind comments wrgmr1. As you say one battery of Perry artillery, 2 Regiments of Foundry Kurassiers plus 2 of Perrys, with the rest being splendid Calpe chaps. I've got loads more Prussian to photograph and even more to paint but got side-tracked onto Russians and Austrians! Cheers, Paul |

Paul- I should also say it looks like you have a lovely home in a beautiful part of the world. How many Prussian do you actually have? When I'm done it should be close to 1000. Almost all Calpe except for 3 regiments of cavalry, recently acquired. |

Hi Wrgmr1, 1000 Prussians is impressive especially if they're almost all Calpe! Mine are mostly Calpe too but I do also have the odd few battalions of Foundry, Perry, Elite and some Old Glory limbers and one infantry battalion. Almost forgot, one regiment of Connoisseur Uhlans. I'm not actually sure how many I have altogether but I will have to have an audit when I get home next week. Still got loads more to paint including Landwehr, Jagers, Reserve Infantry in British Uniforms, "normal" Reserve Infantry, 3 more batteries of artillery plus limbers, Landwehr Cavalry, Hussars, more Dragoons and loads more of the lovely command bases of all sorts. Must get back to painting them but trying to finish off some Austrians before the end of the month. Hope to do 1st Pomeranian Landwehr cavalry next: link Cheers, Paul |

Hi Paul, If you are open to it we could continue our discussions via E-mail as I see you are not a paid member and cannot PM. If you so wish, please e-mail me at t j m 3 at shaw.ca I have some Landwehr to finish then it's onto some line/fusiliers. Our battalions are only 12 figures strong, with cavalry regiments being 6 figures each. I will have 23 battalions of Landwehr and 32 of line/fusiliers when I'm done. Also 15 two gun batteries. I'll have to count up the cavalry? I really want to paint up some Pomeranian Landwehr cavalry as well, but all my figures have the British style Shako! |
