I sat through the read the last 100 pages of Romer's A History of Ancient Egypt tonight. Good read, but more an academic work than general history. Helps if you have a working knowledge of archeology.

Recommended for the scholarly.

I think Romer has an axe to grind about the timeline of the kings IIRC
