I'm currently teaching my 4th year Latin students selections from the GESTA FRANCORUM, about the first Crusade, and thought that maybe in January I might do a game aboyt the battle of Dorylaeum. I want to keep my costs manageable, so I was thinking of using 1/72 scale plastics. However, the selection seems a little thin for the first Crusade. It looks like the Hat Industries EL CID range would do okay, maybe the Airfix Sheriff of Nottigham for some things and Caesar does have a some useful stuff. What I think is missing are good Seljuk Turks, since they seem to be mainly horse archers and I don't know quite what to use. Does anyone have a good set of suggestions for the minis for the First Crusade in general, and the Seljuks in particular? |

Any company that makes Normans is perfect for 1st crusades. Check Revell and Strelets. Italiery or Zvezda makes Muslems for Seljuks. Many other also make Arabs that are pretty generic for the whole period. Several companie make Byzantines: link |

The crusaders would probably be rather "Norman" looking. I'd go with some of the various Strelets Norman boxes. link El Cid would also work for variety maybe. I'd stay away from the Sheriff of Nottingham set. It is not a very historically accurate set, especially for the first crusade. Have a look at the general Crusader sets too. link Italeri would definitely work for first crusades. For the others, Muslim Warriors here. link And Moors here. link That should fill the ranks of both sides. Hope that helps, John |

They are not plastic or 1/72, so maybe you aren't interested, but Old glory 15s makes metal 15mm that cost 10 USD for 20 foot or 10 mounted. They have everything you need for the 1st crusade. Very high quality figures, and pretty affordable, if you decide to go that route. |
