US Rangers can replace 60 mm mortars with 80's. Why would you not do that? Is the 60's fire over friendly troops different then any mortar? Is it a direct fire advantage over the larger mortars? The same question with rifle/mg teams over auto rifles why take the auto rifles. Some of the options in FOW seam odd. |

Before V3, the 60mm mortar had direct OR indirect fire, while the 80mm was indirect only. Since then, all medium mortars have gained direct fire so the difference is moot. As for the auto-rifles… they're often a tiny bit cheaper. On the move they're the same. Pinned they're the same…. but if all things are equal and they cost the same then you're right, Rifle/MG is the better choice! |

For my US FoW forces I prefer the Auto Rifle armed teams backed up with attached LMGs. I prefer specialized fire and maneuver elements within my plattons rather than having all of my teams having the exact same stats/abilities. I like to go "offensive" more often than not, so Rifle/MGs would not often get their full vaule in my games, as opposed to me moving out with a bunch of Auto rifles supported by some stationary LMGs where I feel like I'm getting more vaule out of my teams. BTW, don't forget Auto Rifles that are not pinned, get to reroll misses when conducting defensive fire. That's really a plus when taken along with the consideration of their cheaper price. US Rangers can replace 60 mm mortars with 80's. Why would you not do that? Possible answers: -Historical/Scenario accuracy -Points savings Cheers, VB |

look at the stats on the various weapons for the answer. 60mm mortars have a lower FP rating than 81mm, so better at digging out gone to ground stuff. on auto rifles it could be point costs |

I doubt that it is reflected in FOW, but a 60mm mortar is far more useful in a maneuver situation. The 80mm mortar is not very portable (darn heavy!) and takes more men to effectively lug it around. The 60mm is easily man portable and takes less crew. |

Maybe it's an artifact from development. The 81mm mortar is strictly better than the 60mm in every way in FOW. |

Beacause some people like to play the period, not the rules? |

The reason you swap it is the 81mm mortar has direct fire smoke. No reason (game competitive) not to swap, DFS too useful to pass up on. |
