John Tiller Software released the Peninsular War today.

A little dissapointed as it only covers 1808-1811. So no Salamanca or Vittoria im afraid. However, another solid entry in this Napoleonic series from the guy who brought us the 'ole' Battleground games.

They remind me of the old Talonsoft games from the late '90s. Do they play similar?

pretty much the same style, but a whole let better.

For instance, casualties are per man and not in blocks of 25.

Cavalry are properly much more effective.(Nothing like the old TS games where your 600 cuirassiers are bloodly repulsed by the disordered landwehr battalion)

Assaulting artillery is way more difficult, as each movement inside an artillery's fire arc is open for instant opportunity fire(used to take place after movement in the Defensive Phase). This applies to counter battery fire also.

Leaders are also more plentiful at low levels(Colonels ect.)So you can actually commit a leader now instead of the old TS where it would screw up your whole chain of command if he were gunned down.

It is STILL a tedious game however! Maneuvering each battery, battalion, squadron, and skirmish company. They have a command control option but it is kinda clunky and not very user friendly. SO if you are a meticulous guy, then these games are for you. But,if you did not like the old Talonsoft series, you won't like this. Horses for courses..

Anyway, think of it as a much beefed up Talonsoft remake.

Oh and forgot to mention all the players moves happen in 1 phase now, making play by email a breeze. In the old TS games you had to send your opponent around 8 emails to make 1 turn….sucked.

His 'Borodino' took eons to complete. I'd usually lost interest by the time I'd shifted Davout's corps into a postion to deliver his historically much-argued for right flanking attack, as there was no way I was going to make a suicidal massive central attack at the Russian redoubts and onto their cannon, as historically happened.

A properly-implemented campaign system would greatly improve things for me at least.

I love moving the troops around in the game !! and besides don't we do the same in are mini games ?

True, but in the big battles it gets tedious….for me.

I did finish Gettysburg, winning once with each side. The extra moving of skirmishers put the breaks on Napoleonic games. However lots of resources- OOB, stats (you could open the data sets up in a text file in does) and all that lovely music.

From his web site:

The balance of the Peninsular conflict is covered in a follow-up title currently in development.

So patience, grasshopper!

Funny, I read "PC" and thought "Politically Correct".
