So I know Spartan Games tend to have a volatile affect on people's opinions. I, for one, hold their games in very low esteem.

However, I was curious when I saw the Planetfall rules on the shelf of the FLGS, so I bought it. The artwork and graphics are phenomenal, but I havent delved into the gameplay at all.

What DID catch my attention, however, and please correct me if I am wrong, is that there appears to be no force orgs in the book! No unit stats, no nothing that would let me sit down and play the game.

Am I blind?

I am suspecting that what I need is in the 2-player box set, which I will not be purchasing because a) I dont like SG THAT much, and b) I dont need more proprietary models from any company, let alone in a bastardized size like 10mm.

I dont even see any downloads being available from their webpage (Planetfall isnt listed at all there), but neither do I see army books in their store. I am a bit perplexed…and am refusing to read the rulebook now because I need to keep it in mint condition for what feels like an inevitable return to the FLGS.

Your thoughts? Im a bit surprised this is the first thread on this new game…

I am not at all certain but my understanding is that unit rules are packaged with the models themselves? They really seem to be pushing the modular ruleset here which I suppose makes some sense given past criticisms. Hopefully they'll also be in pdf format on the website eventually though

Well, if SG does one thing right, it's making models of a unique scale to force people to buy their stuff.

Looks like, if this is confirmed, I'll be returning the book then. Thanks for the heads up.

Their site says all that stuff is still in pre-order, wonder how your FLGS got a copy.

My FLGS has everything on their shelf.

Normally the PDF will be available within a day or two of the models ship dates. I just play Dystopian Wars (and quite like it and the models)so I'm not sure about Planetfall dates.

I really liked the concept of Dystopian Legions, but was disapointed by the scale (36mm?).This means you can't mix them with any other figs. Also I bought a starter set only to find I needed to buy another set to complete a unit. That would mean I'd have 3 too many.
The Dystopian wars have tiny fighters that are supposed to be icons for a unit. The larger units aren't meant to be icons.
I like the space ships but forget about the game.
I gave up on the company.

I'd have been more interested if they had gone with either 6mm or 15mm. I guess they felt infantry was just too tiny in 6mm so upped it a bit. Same scale as Drop Zone Commander I believe.

I'd also have been more interested if there had been more local interest in Firestorm Armada.

@ Kealios – I seem to recall for FA the force org rules are in the fleet lists. These are free downloads for FA. Perhaps just wait a bit?

My biggest gripe about unique sizes is terrain. I have a ton of 6mm, 15mm and 28mm terrain these being the prevalent sizes. When something 10mm,12mm,36mm,40mm,54mm, etc comes out I immediately eliminate it from consideration based on having to buy a whole new set of terrain for the game. Especially when it is urban themed.

I still might buy certain models to use in my primary scales (ie. a 10mm drone to use in 15mm, a 40mm figure to use as a 28mm giant) but for the most part they have excluded me from playing their game.

Kealios31 Oct 2014 2:12 p.m. PST

That, ironically, is my primary concern as well…

McWong7331 Oct 2014 2:50 p.m. PST

I picked up a few pieces in metal that they released on a very limited basis I think lest year. Being a 15mm gamer I wanted to check if these were any good in that scale. These were hover tanks from the Drizendi (???) range.

They're tiny compared to my 15mm gear, though this particular model would work very well as a drone or weapons platform like the Eldar use.

SG are GW in short pants – they have learnt that with a bit of luck , the right marketing and a naive player base, you can inconvenience them to the point of contempt and enough will still hang around to keep your product viable.

yorkie o101 Nov 2014 2:26 a.m. PST

Although it looks interesting and the minis look nice, I think they have missed a trick with the scale, in 6mm, it would have been so much better. There are hundreds (thousands?) of epic gamers out there who would have snapped this up if it was in 6mm…

Oh well….

Kealios01 Nov 2014 11:46 a.m. PST

This is why most of us are still looking forward to Polyversal, coming (supposedly) later this year.

I believe this was a direct attempt to counter DropZone Commander, which was also done in 10mm.

10mm actually is an EXCELLENT scale because of the amount of detail you can add to the minis. The problem is, the world has already committed to 6mm or 15mm…paving new ground is an uphill battle.

BaldLea02 Nov 2014 7:59 a.m. PST

Kealios, you really need to break your addiction to new rulesets! ☺

Spencer Barrett Winchester02 Nov 2014 10:55 a.m. PST

I love their models, but am loathe to commit to an entirely new scale. It's a pity this isn't 6mm.

Kealios02 Nov 2014 11:30 a.m. PST

BaldLea, you've found me out! I DO have an addiction to rules…and I am dedicated to keeping the industry alive and well through my purchases! This is also why I'm buying more and more PDFs :)

keeper Nilbog02 Nov 2014 12:51 p.m. PST

Force lists are released as PDF's on the website (apparently the person in control is on Hol's at present, so all 6 core races should be available next week)

Have the starter, and if these are 10mm, I'm not sure about that (but not 15mm). They are Large models, the Directorate heavy Tank making a quite nice light tank for 15mm.
