Hi, I'm looking for uniform and horse furniture sources on the appearance of the Don Cossacks in the early war period. This should include front and back uniform images. Maybe someone's Google-fu is better than mine? Thanks. |

PygmyWars has a whole section on WW1/RCW Cossacks. |

That seems to be for the RCW. I think there were changes to the uniform in 1915-16 (but would be happy to be corrected). My main interests are knowing if the wide leather object on the diagonal strap on the left shoulder was part of the uniform in 1914. And frankly, what it is. Sometimes it is shown as a simple blank flap, perhaps to protect the man's chest because of the heaviness of the carbine, other times as cartridge pouches. Which was it? Also there are no images there showing the back of a man in summer field dress to demonstrate how equipment was worn. Any ideas? |

Mark Conrad made a webpage with an orbat for the 1914 Russian Army: link If googling the Russian for "Don Cossacks" with images, one of the results was a movie still of two cavalrymen who wore equipment with two shoulder straps of at least 6 inch wide. |

Those are bandoliers. About 30 rounds, in clips IIUC. The wide pre-war ones seem to have been blacked sometimes at least. I think war-time ones were probably brown, and sometimes cloth. Troops might have bandoliers or belt pouches or both, in a random manner in practice. The Handbook of the Russian Army says both for 1914 Cossack cavalry. Infantry wore them too. |

Some interesting pictures of a Cossack coat in this auction: auction These are the best shots I come across with google. Most say 1914 or at the start of the war.

They're not Don Cossacks Sigwald. In the unlikely event the auction is a real article, it is Kuban Cossack. I think your last photo is the "Savage Division" from late WWI, so not even Cossack at all. (Don Cossacks did not wear the Cherkesska at any time.) The bandolier is clearly visible in your second photo, you can even see the lumps from the clips. |

I certainly don't know my cossacks…other than I'll hope to cut them down with maxim fire lol. That's all the cossacky stuff I could find so my google fu failed me as well. |

What Mark said. Only the Kuban and Terek Cossacks wore the elaborate dress portrayed. The other Cossack hosts dressed fairly similarly to line cavalry. They would carry a short whip, rather than wearing spurs. And I believe the pattern of sabre was unique. Otherwise, the cap would be worn to one side of the head. IIRC, Don Cossacks had dark blue shoulder boards with red trim. |
