Note. The Ottoman army remains a very confusing organization, primarily because the Turks often defined terms such as "Regular" differently than in the West. In general, traditional military forces included irregular forces (Toprakli) called up for service for the duration of war only, as well as full time, salaried soldiers paid by the state (Kapakula). The latter were well drilled in individual combat skills, but inadequately trained to fight in formations or as a part of a larger unit. Provincial and vassal forces were those raised personally by provincial governors and similar, often in defiance of the Ottoman Sultan rather than in support of. Some, such as Egyptian Mamluks, were excellent, being military slaves who trained hard and daily since being able to walk, but others were pathetic. The Nizam – I Cedit and Segban – I Cedit was a short lived attempt to form a New Army based on European standards. Though marvelously successful, they disappeared in 1808 and would not reappear until the wholesale slaughter of the Janissaries in 1826.
Ciao, Colonel Bill
