I will be at Crisis 2014 Antwerp upcoming Saturday and I was wondering if anyone would have a must see recommendation for the Antwerp area apart from the Convention. We will arrive Friday and leave on Sunday, so we will have plenty of time. I was thinking of seeing the Brussels Army Museum (as we are coming from Frankfurt/Germany) Anything else in particular interesting for ah 18th C enthusiast like me? Thanks for any advise you can forward. Cheers, Christian crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.de |

You might want to ask this question to one of the TSA members. I know there are a few fortifications hidden in the Antwerp (harbour) area, but you do need someone to guide you to them. They are mostly late 16th C but some have been upgraded through time, up to early 19th C. More fortifications around Antwerp are build to defend Antwerp against Germany when WW1 broke out. I have no idea if any of these would be open for visit next weekend. Again, ask the TSA staff. Best to ask for Johan, if he's available… |

I can certainly recommend the Army Museum in Brussels. I have spent a day and a half there and still didn't see it all. Watch out though, it closes for lunch if I remember correctly. |

Christian, Within walking distance from the venue is the MAS museum. While some of the exhibits are only so- so, the maritime part of it( I believe on the 4th floor) is excellent. Lots of interesting 17th and 18th c stuff. Most of the fortifications around Antwerp are of a later date( 19th and 20th C) alas, and mostly, except for Fort 8, in a dreadful state. The older fortifications (14-15th C) can only be visited occasionaly and with an official guide. The Royal Army museum in Brussels is a must. It's open on Sundays from 10 till 18.00 and it will take you about a 35 minutes drive to get there from Antwerp. |

You can visit the Liefkenshoek fortress (16th century) in Antwerp: link About a 30 minutes drive from Antwerp, just across the Dutch border, you can visit the fortified town of Hulst: starforts.com/hulst.html Hope this helps, Rudi Geudens – TSA |

Hallo Christian, so ein Mist – I only find your message now, having returned from Antwerp… Could join you guys at the Army Museum tomorrow if that's what you're doing? Be sure to visit the Titeca gallery above the arch, and not just for the view of Brussels! |

So Sorry, Musketeer. It would have been really great to meet you at Crisis. We haven't been to the Brussels museum Sunday, but instead decided to see that Königstiger No 213 of the 1944 Bulge battle on display at La Gleize near Malmedy in the Haute-Ardennes. A great trip thanks to the true millennial weather we enjoyed today. Ardennes in sunny autumn is so much better then museums tungsten light. |

Not to worry Christian, perhaps next time then. Glad you had such a great day for your excursion! Today we're back to Fifty Shades of Grey – without the sizzling bits… |
