Cimon of Athens was one of the more prominent victims of ostracism. In 462 BC, he led an unsuccessful expedition to support the Spartans during the helot uprisings. As a result, he was dismissed and ostracized from Athens in 461 BC; however, he was recalled from his exile before the end of his ten-year ostracism & re-instated without a stain on his honour to broker a five-year peace treaty in 451 BC between Sparta and Athens. I probably live in Cloud-Cuckoo Land but here's a suggestion. Allow any & everyone who was banned from TMP the option to return to the fold. They'd have to agree to follow the rules & keep any criticism of the site within the bounds commensurate with its positive functioning (ie not bring up the editor's personal life). In return, Bill would need to spell out the goals & methods of the moderation system & undertake to follow them even handedly. It would take a certain stepping down from both sides if they were up to the challenge. Any who don't take up the offer should shut up. They won't but then they can be regarded as the obsessive whiners that they have proved themselves to be. |

Speaking from experience, if you ask, he'll restore your account. No grovelling needed, but no need to be an ass either. |

So Frothers is Sparta? Just wondering as this is where most of the Athenian exiles went. |

if you ask, he'll restore your account. Great! So there's no obstacle to us becoming a mutually supportive & agreeable community! I look forward to (cyber) hugging the exiles. |

Sorry ochoin I agree with the sentiment but the anology doesn't hold for me. We did not mark our potsherds for the expulsions and resignations they just happened. As things are it would need a truth and reconcilliation process backed by a anmesty to set the clock back. A good thought though we should be a mutually supportive & agreeable community! |

If so, Slappy…..IMAGE That'll really help, ochoin. |

@ RD Tolerance, a sense of humour. I often find they go hand in hand. |
Rick Dangerous | 29 Oct 2014 7:01 a.m. PST |
I know, I know. I do indeed have a sense of humour (allegedly). But I also have a sense of what those interminable Frothers can be like. I felt the image was a tad inflammatory. YMMV. Apologies. |

"Tolerance, a sense of humour. I often find they go hand in hand." Sadly lacking in some quarters. I hear veteran wargamer Steve Price is the latest casualty of a lock-out. |

I'm fine with the way it is. Bill seems to have a high level of tolerance before lockout so its not like these drop from the sky like unexpected lightning bolts. |

@Ochoin: great picture! I have sent it to my wife to brighten her morning :-) Thank you |

>>Bill seems to have a high level of tolerance before lockout so its not like these drop from the sky like unexpected lightning bolts Indeed. I actually think he's a tad TOO tolerant. But what do I know? Martin |
ochoin | 29 Oct 2014 1:07 p.m. PST |
I felt the image was a tad inflammatory Can you inflame the inflamed? BTW AFAIK the vast majority of Frothers are fine &, sensibly, don't give a hoot about TMP. |
David Manley | 29 Oct 2014 1:25 p.m. PST |
AFAIK most "Frothers" are also TMP regulars. Certainly most of the ones I know are. |

BTW AFAIK the vast majority of Frothers are fine &, sensibly, don't give a hoot about TMP. Not sure…since I don't go there… But I had someone that does go there tell me that they have one post that has over a thousand (1000+) pages of posting on TMP, and that's just ONE post. TBH, for the "vast majority that don't give a hoot about TMP"….1000+ pages of postings on a site that they don't give a hoot about kind of tells otherwise… |
David Manley | 29 Oct 2014 10:50 p.m. PST |
But it is a thousand pages with contributions from a very small number of regular posters, plus some TMP fans who go there to stoke the fires |
ochoin | 29 Oct 2014 11:45 p.m. PST |
1000+ pages of postings on a site that they don't give a hoot about kind of tells otherwise I think it's been generated a half dozen obsessives: not indicative of Frothers in general. I haven't been to the "pot" for a while. The other boards are low traffic but sometimes have items of interest. |
Rick Dangerous | 30 Oct 2014 10:07 a.m. PST |
I had a look-see at that bloated thread (don't worry, I've showered since) and sadly it seems there are definitely more than 'half a dozen obsessives'. There's quite a few ex-pats. And the visitors from here posting on that thread… well, they're no better really. Saddening. AFAIK most "Frothers" are also TMP regulars. Certainly most of the ones I know are. A lot of usernames there were familiar. But then, there are also familiar 'faces' on LAF, The Guild, Steve Dean, WW and out in the blogosphere. It can be a strange hobby sometimes. |

@ RD Discussing other gaming websites strikes me as not unlike watching a particularly dreary reality TV episode like Big Brother or some such. Lots of fatuous & utterly pointless analysis & boring "insights", endless examination of relationships & the sense that you could something-anything- to better fill your time with. And yes, I'm to blame here for discussing the "F" place. I think I'll just stick to wargaming topics & let those who get a kick out of fighting internet battles between forae alone. |
Rick Dangerous | 30 Oct 2014 1:39 p.m. PST |
Apologies. For the record, I'm not fighting any battle, I'm just responding to others, including your good self. This thread is supposed to be about those ostracised from here though. They must go somewhere? I'm sure there are many members who are also members of other forums for various reasons. And that is their prerogative. No harm, no foul. But yes, discussing message boards on an internet message board is more than a little pointless! And Big Brother is a crime against humanity. |
