I had the brilliant idea of using old CDs to base some bomb craters. The idea was to cover up the hole in the middle with a thin piece of mylar, and then glue cardboard around the edge, cover it in basing compound, and then top it the dirt and grass effects. The whole idea has stalled because the mylar won't stick to the CD. I am worried the cardboard won't stick either when I try to glue it. It occurs to me that I had the same sort of problem when I tried to use glass beads on telephone poles, but couldn't get them to stick -- I wonder if the CD isn't more like glass than plastic.

Should I abandon the CD idea? If so, what should I use? Wood is my normal basing material, but this size would be beyond my cutting ability.

If you score/ crosshatch the CD around the center hole and then use white glue and a thin piece of cardboard it will seal the hole. It also helps the basing compound stay if you score the entire CD

Masking tape has worked well for me in the past. I cover the hole with tape and then use basing material (usu. pumice gel) and it's never been a problem.

Masking tape.

Like those before me, I suggest masking tape.

I made a ring of cardboard and covered both sides with masking tape, then painted it in PVA glue (white wood work glue) and coated it in sand, leaving it to dry.

Once dry I painted it.

I made a large one, which can be seen here:

I have also used masking tape. Find he wider kind that covers the hole with just one strip.

Variation on a theme: I used Avery address labels I'd printed the wrong address on (in case your masking tape is as ancient and pathetic as mine).

I do something similar with fender washers when I use them as figure bases. I cover the bottom with electric tape and fill the hole with epoxy when I mount the figure.

Yep, as above. I sand and score the CD to give it something to grab on.

Do not use the "painted or label side" because I have had the label peel off once the glue dried. If you can remove it with simple green, go for it.

For the center hole I just used an old business card over the hole.

I use old foil pie dishes covered in spackle (plaster of paris) for craters. Does the trick for me.

If you need to stick things to a CD, buy a big bottle of Gorilla glue.

It'll foam up slightly but that shouldn't affect bomb craters.

It does stick lie 'the proverbial'to a blanket…

The other go-to glueing system where neatness is not an issue, is, of course, a hot glue gun.
