Found this on the USN Chronological site: 'Japan declares war on the Netherlands; invasion of Netherlands East Indies begins as Japanese Central Force (Vice Admiral Hirose Sueto) lands Army 56th Regimental Combat Group and 2d Kure Special [Naval] Landing Force at Tarakan; naval paratroops (1st Yokosuka Special Landing Force) occupy Menado. Eastern Force (Rear Admiral Kubo Kuji) then follows up the airborne assault on Menado with 1st Special Landing Force going ashore at Menado and Kema, Celebes. These operations will secure control of the northern approaches to the Java Sea.' Does anyone know if this was a parachute assault, air-landed, or if the Japanese parachutists were landed over beaches like normal infantry ? For anyone who wants it, the URL is: link |

I think the paras were dropped on or near the air field. Or oil field not sure. |

From these "impeccable" sources, it seems that more than just the 1st YSLF was used as paratroops. First link states that the SLF paratroopers performed more drops than the regular Army paratroopers did. link link And some more information about the airdrop at Menado: link link Hope this helps. Osprey Elite 127 on Japanese Para Units is a fantastic source of info if your looking for further reading and pics. The Giretsu Airborne Unit on Okinawa were wearing camo uniforms which was an amazing find for me. |

The few IJF Paras and their ops are pretty interesting … Don't think many survived the war though. When I went to Jump School at Benning in the early 80s … we had two modern Japanese Paras do the 250 ft. tower jumps with us. Don't know if they did any jumps with us from aircraft. They wore what looked like our old green fatigues, IIRC. I remember a Black Hat yelling at them about something, but I don't think their English was not more than a basic understanding ? |

East Riding Miniatures do the figures for them in 15mm. They're a little crude (old castings), but paint up quite well |

That Osprey Elite is one of the good ones…….very good account of their ops against the Dutch and Commonwealth troops……. |
