About a year ago there was a short thread about WSS gaiters. Supercilious Maximus indicated that both the British and Bavarians were early adopters of this style (see link). TMP link Does anyone have any thoughts as to colour? Black seems a possible choice, but it is also possible that they were left in the natural colour of the fabric (canvas?). I am primarily interested in the colour of the Bavarian gaiters, but it will be useful to be able to store away information for the British for future use. |

Although Anton Hoffman's drawings in his series "The Army of the Blue King" are black and white, the gaiters appear to be white or a very light color. IIRC, most "colorized" versions of the drawings I've seen show white. I would paint them off-white. Most armies did not adopt black gaiters until the late 1740s-1750s. |

At least a few units had buff or ochre colored gaiters. Some may have been leather. Churchill's 3rd, and The 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers come to mind. I suspect, that VERY soon on campaign in the WSS any white gaiters, which, I believe were rare, were a very off white, bordering on beige/buff/ochre. Since no strapping or belting was white in the WSS, I would be hesitant to think gaiters were commonly white, though some English Foot Guards are shown so in Osprey's "Uniforms of Marlborough's Army." Grant Shows a Buff example, as do some of the Hall Plates. I believe Db is correct about black gaiters. |

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Off-white it will be. |
