Oh no not yet another thread about Future, but having seen how much it is revered by many I thought I would try and find the equivalent here in Sydney Australia. Off I googled and discovered The Complete Future article, tracing the guises of Future. It said "Through inquiries to the S.C. Johnson distributor in N.S.W. I have learned of another product that is very similar to Future called "Pledge One Go"." No Pledge One Go could be found, but something called Pledge Wood Magic 5in1 ("cleans, dusts, moisturises, revitalises, shines")is now with me. A web site (and I now can't recall which) said it was the equivalent of Future. The liquid is amber, it smells soapy and my suspicions were rising. Applying it to a miniature seemed to result in a thorough quoiffing rather than any discernible varnish. If using it will merely result in me having the cleanest miniatures in the Southern Hemisphere, what is the name of the Future equivalent here? Any help welcome! |

Looking at S C Johnson's Australian web page, there's no Future equivalent on there at all – it looks like they withdrew Pledge One Go around 2011 and didn't replace it. From a quick Google, it seems the nearest Australian substitute is Pascoe's long life self shining floor polish: link It's a different formulation to Future / Klear [this one's ammonia based, so best not to lick your brush… ;-) ] but is the one Aussie modellers seem to go for. |

Thanks for the quick response DS. Looking at other blogs there seems to be an acknowledged difference between Long Life and the fabled Future, basically concerns regarding the uniformity of paint adhesion and colouring, perhaps caused by the ammonia. Just tried through Amazon to purchase the Pledge Floor care product. Everything was fine – found a supplier that would ship internationally and accepted the $14 USD rather than $7 USD price tage, until it came to shipping which was $158 USD for one bottle!!! |

Maybe they'll cut you a shipping discount if you get two…. ;-) |

Days of Pledge are behind us I'm afraid. I gave away my last bottle not knowing you couldn't get it anymore. Word is that the other products like Pascoes don't cut it, so for light varnishes I'm using rattle cans. |

I'm in Canada, but this thread is going to make me go buy three more bottles of Future tonight (have two in house already). You guys in Australia should march in the streets or have a sit-in at the SC Johnson offices. |

Yes Wyeayeman I feel your pain, and God knows the contribution by the Sex Pistols to miniatures has persistently been overlooked, but it is just acryliic floor varnish… |

I have gone to the trouble of calling up their sales representatives and getting them to contact HQ. I had no luck finding it in a few countries I tried. If I go to a "pledge" country I will load up my suitcase. |

Clear urethane, available from woodworking suppliers, is capable of achieving the same results: tough, durable, clear varnish coating. If you can find a urethane-stain, so much the better! Future/Klear is simply a clear acrylic, water-based, floor coating. Urethane is similar, only solvent-based [NOTE: there are urethane formulas which are water-based…]. If you can locate a urethane-stain which is a dark brown, or even black, then you will have found the original, The Dip, formulation. I've used both Magic Wash (Future/Klear + acrylic paint) and The Dip (urethane-stain), and they each have their place, but I actually prefer The Dip. YMMV. Cheers! |

Thanks Sgt Slag. The hunt for water based varnish has started! |

Marc that is incredibly kind of you but in the meantime I bought a can of British Paints acrylic gloss varnish. After I overcame my alarm at its milky white colour I tried it out and it seems to work fine. Some of my inks didn't oblige by slithering over the gloss varnish and into crevasses but others seemed to so I will need to experiment further. Many thanks again for your offer. Will let you know if the BP varnish is the problem. Cheers |
