Apparently, the Taiwanese are tired of waiting for upgraded submarines, so are considering building their own:

They predict that China could take the islands by invasion, as soon as 2020, so modernizing their submarine fleet is critical to helping maintain a credible deterrence force.

The US is so afraid of offending China that betrayal of Taiwan was to be expected. We are going to be losing allies all over, because we fear our biggest "partner".

@CC: Actually, the US did a heel-face turn on Taiwan. In late 1949 or early 1950, the US told Mao to finish the civil war and assault the island of Formosa. In the 6 months or so it took the Chinese army to mass their forces and sealift, the Kim family with Soviet backing invaded South Korea. It was at that point that the US told China that the only way the PRC would invade Taiwan was through the 7th fleet.

Sounds like Taiwan isn't feeling so sure anymore. Not feeling the love I guess.

I remember when so much of what I bought said "Made in Taiwan". That's when I was a kid though. Every time I watch Armageddon I laugh when the Russian astronaut gripes about all the Taiwan components.

Pretty steep and expensive learning curve in building your own subs. I think the Aussies can attest to that. Perhaps they could flog them some Collins Class at a discount.

The 2020 date has been widely bandied about, yet Taiwan keeps reducing its military budget. Building their own subs is bound to take a bite out of what's left.

'PS. The time has come to learn Mandarin!!!'

我觉得你说的对。IMO, that is actually pretty good advice, regardless of politics. I was doing my Mandarin homework in a coffee shop the other day, when a chap walked by and said, 'I really admire you learning another language … at your age.' Ah well, he may have a point. Start the kids early!

I second learning any languages early. Japanese kicked my ass thoroughly and I'm "only" in my 30s.

Apparently, I don't still have that learn-a-language-easily feature in my brain turned on…

Quite frankly, I'm surprised they just don't buy some from the Germans, or Swedes, assuming either country would sell to them.

China will yell and scream, and Germany makes too much money off their export sector to risk a Chinese trade embargo over even being asked to supply submarines to Taiwan.

Taiwan would probably have better luck ordering Improved Kilos from Russia…
