This is an interesting article on the issues that have lead to the tensions over the Senkaku Islands, between Japan, and China: link The seeds of the current conflict were laid back in the late 1800's, when China lost a major naval battle to Japan, and were exacerbated by their very poor showing against the Japanese Army in WWII. |

Very accurate if somewhat superficial article. I've been watching the tensions for years, having a lot of personal knowledge of Japan and South Korea. The real maximum stress point will be in about 12-14 months. The PRC has decided the current admin is a "Weak Reed" and will push hard before a new regime gets in place in the US. They know if it came to a shooting war over Taiwan or Japan the US could crush them at will. The only way it works is if they feel the US admin would only provide tepid support. |

The Chinese pressure is the primary reason Shinzo Abe was elected. Also this new pressure is increasing ties between South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and Japan. I don't expect that to mean more than Intel sharing though. The Japanese are so xenophobic that they have a hard time imagining they really need anyone's help. |

The Japanese are so xenophobic that they have a hard time imagining they really need anyone's help. No, they can picture needing people's help. They just burned their bridges and salted the earth back in the 1930s and 1940s as far as actual military cooperation goes. |
