Were either the Rolls Royce or Marmon Herrington armoured cars used in either Malaya or Burma 1942/43? Thanks for any info you can provide. Cheers Nick |

Yes, Marmon Herrington MkIII MFF and Lanchester armoured cars were used in Malaya/Burma in 41-42. The MH were not fitted with Boys ATR. |

QRF make the Lanchester and BF and QRF the MH India Pattern Armoured carriers were landed in Singapore. I think the MHs were probably still in Desert Yellow, mthe Lanchesters in Green. Lanchesters were taken over and used by the Argylls. |

The BF Marmon Herrington is the MkIII MFF, just leave off the ATR. |

Thanks Chaps. I was aware of the Lanchesters but wasn't sure about the MH. Any info on use of the RR A/C (not the carrier) in Burma? Cheers Nick |

No Lanchesters or Marmon-Herringtons were present in Burma. The Burma Frontier Force did however, use Rolls Royce India Pattern Armoured Cars (as did the 1st Glosters, who stole them from a BFF depot in Rangoon). The Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps had a platoon of Lanchesters. The Malay Armoured Car Squadron was equipped with Lanchesters. Marmon-Herringtons were landed in Singapore with the 18th Recce Regiment, though they don't seem to have seen any action. The Indian 3rd Cavalry Regiment took India Pattern Wheeled Armoured Carriers to Singapore, though again, they don't seem to have seen action with that regiment (which served as a motorised infantry battalion). However, some of the Carriers saw action with Australian forces. |

I should add that the BFF Rolls Royces only saw action in early 1942 – they were all lost east of the Chindwin. The India Pattern Rolls Royce had the 'Dalek' style domed turret also seen on the Crossley India Pattern Armoured Car. |
