I have been neglecting my painting of late but have finally had the brushes out to finish this unit of Companion Cavalry for Hydaspes at the Society of Ancients Games day next year.

The bases still need finishing off and there are another two units in the pipeline.

That is a good looking unit Simon. Great mix of poses and figures, nice touch with the prodromoi – the unit comes up well on larger horses. Have some old Naismith Seleucid Companions which may benefit from the same treatment.

I am slowly replacing all my wavy metal spears with brass as I am getting tired of re-touching the 'bends'!

Love those old RAFM's and Ral Partha's they still give alot of bang for the buck!!

I too like to upscale them with more modern horses… the horse give them the heft and 28mm figures often have undersized riders… nice job

Thanks – I agree that RAFM and Ral Partha have some lovely figures, I especially like the huge assortment of RAFM heads. However their horse models leave a lot to be desired. Foundry Late Roman range are smaller than most modern oversized 28's and fit best. Relic and First Corps horses also work but need a bit more carving to fit the rider.
I too have been replacing old bendy spears but could not resist these ones from the now defunct Corvus miniatures which come with butt spike.

Nice work.

Sometimes one needs to play to the strengths and hide the weaknesses of figures… being an old timer means having stacks of things to hunt and pick from… RAFM horses have to be the worst ever, to be blunt. Back in the day most of my RAFM's got Minifigs and Ral Partha horses…

But seeing yours mounted on Relic horses gives me some upgrade ideas!!
