While I do understand that different manufacturers make figures of different sizes, I think that gamers (and even collectors) do themselves a disservice by making too much of this issue.
I have used infantry figures from several manufacturers. As others have stated, I find that the H&R figures are in many cases the best. Probably truest (and most consistent) in scale, and more importantly to me available in a good mix of figures and poses for those like me who put together units at 1-to-1 unit scale.
But I must confess that I just love the detail of the GHQ individual infantry figures. I have read comments from others indicating that some GHQ figure sets really are out-sized. The US WW2 Paras and Vietnam figures seem to have gone over the line in over-sizing. But I have never seen any of those figures first-hand, so my opinion on those is second-hand at best.
And while I do not much care for the large head syndrome of Adler figures, I really appreciate the variety of figures and poses that only Adler seems to make. So they too are present in my collection.
I also have some Scotia figures. Again here I appreciate some of the figures and poses that only Scotia seems to make. But in this case, there really are some figures that are just too big to use.
But my tolerance on this issue seems to run far beyond many others on the various fora. And I often wonder at that.
Here you see a variety of figures mixed and matched on the same bases. My Romanian artillery crews are made of figures from both H&R and GHQ. The Guns are GHQ. The HQ stand in the back even adds a Scotia kneeling radio operator (from their WW2 French set), a figure I can't find from other manufacturers.
Do they really look so badly matched that you wouldn't want them in your collection? On your gaming table?
I have read from others how GHQ figures are too big, and how some of the GHQ figures like artillery crew or vehicle crew are more appropriately scaled.
There is an example of how some figures compare. From left-to-right the figures come from: GHQ Romanian Individual Infantry, GHQ Artillery Crew (US or Soviet … same figures), GHQ US Armored Infantry (crew figures for half-tracks), H&R Russian Artillery Crew.
Yes they are not all identical in size. But I find them all acceptable, and mix and match without concern.
We may lament the differences in figure size, but let us remember that real people come in different sizes, too. Here you see your known and notable poster Mk 1 with a couple fellows, Steve Zaloga and Michael Green, who also like to look at tanks (and write books and stuff like that). We are different in size and shape, and when you put us next to another manufacturer's vehicle model (like the 1-to-1 scale Panther in the background) you can see how it highlights the differences. But still, it is a reasonably realistic portrayal, don't you think?
