I am pretty new to Wargaming and even more new to ECW. I am going to put together armies in 15mm based on DBR army lists and hopefully base them so they are also compatible with THW and Piquet. More on that another time. I am planning on buying my minis from Matchlock. I love the range of, for example, Pike and Musketeers to give units real character. Where I am having a problem is in understanding which miniatures should not be mixed. Baldricks, cabasets, Monmouths etc. Should I feel free to mix and match at will in line with the somewhat hodgepodge nature of the regiments as they were loosely constructed during the period or are there some combinations only permitted. There are a lot of minis listed in each 15mm ECW category and don't want to make any hideous historically inaccurate mistakes. Thanks for your patience, I do appreciate this may be a somewhat naive question. |

As the ECW went on helmets became scarcer and were very rarely worn except bt Pikemen and some officers. Musket rests and apostles became less common too. I would happily mix your figures up as like most conflicts troops wore and used what they could get hold of. |

What Bruntonboy said also Piquet will work with any standardised bases they just have to be the same size. Matchlock are very nice figures and will match with Essex and QRF and Khurasan. |

Since this is pre industrial revolution, unless it would be a general convention that was quoted by some who know better,I doubt anybody can call shenanigans on equipment types used by your figures. |

Thanks all, that is very helpful. By my calculation a basing of 4 figures (eg of pike) at 15mm is a company of 100 men (according to DBR). Given that each company will have ensign, sargeant, drummer, officer etc I was trying to work out a reasonable way to represent this in a single element. I was considering having a single element of 4 figures consisting of (officer, drummer, ensign, pike). This would be placed central to the other pike elements and associated shot. This seems to be a reasonable way to represent at least a flavour of these other roles in the regiment, show flags, and still represent element type. Does this sound reasonable? I have tried to find a resource online for 'building a regiment' with little success so am kind of making it up as I go along. Cheers again. |

My ECw 15mm are currently "resting" but I intend to relaunch them shortly. I use RCFM's "Regiment of Foote" rules with four figures per base on a 30mm square but this would also look good with DBx basing… I am going to base my regiments as 4 base of shot and 2 of pikemen but intend keeping the command base separate with officers, musicians and standards on. This way my regiments look like they have a decent number of pikes and I can use different command elements with each unit as required. I intend to have at least a few units with duplicates Parliamentary or Royalist standards. I'll probably also put these on round basses. Mind you it will mean painting a few more figures but will allow me to use some of this odd figures that are not suitable for inclusion in fighting elements… Ranting preachers, a rat catcher, the odd lady or whatever. |

Mine are based on 30mm squares too and I think it looks better than the oblong bases. I always have a command stand for each 4 stand unit. General officers are on round bases. I believe Brent Oman has a new Piquet ECW set in the works presumably it will be more FOB. |

I use DBR and FOG R and I usually build the foot up into regiments of 6 stands 2 pike and 4 shot, an Ensign (flag) middle of one of the pike stands, officer front right of one of the shot stands, and drummers and sargeants back left of a stand. Only go for one "other" to a base, officer, drummer etc. As mentioned the musket rest went out of use early in the civil wars. If the regiment was suited in a colour that means it's coat and britches are the same colour (mostly Royalist), usually britches are of a gray or brown colour. Draggons will probably be in a uniform as per the foot. The Horse, coat colours very limited information on the subject, the only thing that most of them wore is a buff coat this would hide a coat colour if they wore one. The only time on a stand you get an officer/general, cornet,(flag) and trumpeter is on the Generals stands. If you are doing Trained Bands,Militia, Gunners etc you can do give them no uniforms at all. ALL officer wore what they liked (no uniform) If you are thinking of doing TYW with them, build extra pike stands (the one with the Ensign on) and do it the same but with a TYW colours (flag)on it. Good Luck. |

"If you are thinking of doing TYW with them" which is the other reason for the separate command stands… |
