Those of you who share my passion for the Waterloo campaign will be delighted to learn that the wooden figure of Christ crucified, which was stolen from the small chapel of Hougoumont in 2011, has been recovered. Here is a link to a short article, in the form of a Blog, which provides some additional information. The article is in French: link |

I should just like to say that Countess Nathalie du Parc (who is mentioned in the article) is absolutely charming, and she has done a wonderful job in moving the whole process forward at Mont St. Jean despite the constant financial and political wrangling, and having to deal with some appalling local individuals who want nothing but to have their egos massaged (mentioning no names). Those of us interested in the field of battle and the bi-centenary celebrations in 2015 owe her a huge debt of gratitude. John |

I am rarely lost for words but…………. This is quite incredible. I do look forward to more details. I'll be honest……..I just hope to God this is true. It is so sensational that I do wonder why it is not all over the internet already. This could almost make the national news, surely, if confirmed. Please let this be true……. |

@deadhead This is true, rest assured. The announcement was made late on Friday by the regional authorities. I'm sure there'll be plenty of other people who post further information on-line in the coming weeks. My understanding is that the figure of Christ was traced as part of a massive Interpol investigation. John |

This is so heartwarming. Let us hope now that The Belgian authorities realise the significance of its history/provenance. I never thought in a million years we would ever see this again…………. |

Well received news, glad there are some who take care of the regional history. Well done and well timed. Cheers and 3 Huzzars for the Countess ( I'm going to use here in a scenario me thinks) |

Be intersting to learn the details of the actual theft & the motivation behind it? Hopefully the thieves were identified as a result of the excellent police work in investigating and recovering the artifact. |

Why has this not made national news? It is such a marvellous story and highly topical. Not a mention in any paper yet……….nothing on the internet, just reports of the theft. |

Here is an article on the find by Dominique Timmermans, a contact of mine who assists with the monuments at Mont St. Jean. Acccording to Dominique the wooden figure was found by the Police close to the field of battle, in a garage. The 'owner' said he found the figure of Christ crucified at a local 'flea' market (which is rather like a car boot sale). Here's a link to the article: link |

That's astonishing! I'd expected a tale of high drama and Interpol. |

Apparently, there will be a press conference this Friday, Here is a local TV report on the recovery (the report is in French, but I'm sure those of you who do not undertand the language will be able to follow the material): link John P.S. The advertisement for the film 'Fury' at the beginning only lasts around 12 seconds (sorry).

Like Doubting Thomas in the New Testament (strangely appropriate here) I honestly admit I thought this too good to be true. There are too many hoaxes by sad people……this gladdens the heart. Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe…..(or summat like that!) |
