"Roman gladiators had a diet that was mostly vegetarian, according to an analysis of bones from a cemetery where the arena fighters were buried. The study has been carried out by academics from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria and the University of Bern in Switzerland. They found the gladiator diet was grain-based and mostly meat-free. The examination of gladiator bones also found evidence they drank a drink made from plant ashes. Read somewhere that the Legion wouldn't have beef rations because they though it lessened their endurance. Barley was mentioned as a punishment ration so these gladiators either had ed off their owner or they were just cheap. Maybe… |

As far as I remember gladiators were supposed to be rather heavy framed and somewhat "overweight" compared to the average pleb. They bulked up on carbs and had a nice layer of blubber, my image is that of an American football lineman. |

The Roman soldier basic food was lentils. Caesar mention that in his memories. Duncanh, not all the gladiators were fool people. Remember that they became prisioners of war first and many of them were of hight rank (officers). Amicalement Armand |

depends on the era. At some periods being a gladiator was bad, but not too bad.The death rate was low and the plebs merciful. At other times it was really bad. |

Most people, today and thousands of years ago, eat plant based diets. Think about what you eat every day; Unless you're on the Adkins Diet you're really only eating a relatively small amount of meat compared to the amount of coffee, tea, bread, cakes, crackers, cookies, crisps/chips, and french fries, are other plant based foods. |
