"The U.S. Navy is starting early preparation work to design a new nuclear attack submarine to replace the Virginia-class boats (SSN-774) in the 2030s. The new attack boat would become operational in 2044 after the last Block VII Virginias are built. "The long range shipbuilding plan is for a new SSN authorized in 2034 in lieu of the eighth block of Virginia-class," Rear Adm. Dave Johnson, Naval Sea Systems Command's program executive officer for submarines told the Naval Submarine League Symposium in Falls Church, Va., on Thursday "2034 may seem far off, but the design research community needs to take action now." I suspect the more important question will be how to make the subs cheap enough to afford the numbers the US wants/needs. (LOTS, numbers up in the 60s for total production run) |

They're trying to build the Seaview! A submersible aircraft carrier that launches flying submarines which is also bigger on the inside than on the outside. link |

Well, have you seen the Lockmart Cormorant UAV? Submarine-launched and recovered while the sub is under water. I'm honestly expecting the later flights of Virginias and follow-on to have multiple UAVs and UUVs. If we step into another major period of fighting like the 1870s-1920s, I'm also expecting to see more ships turning into submarines. Particularly those ships that need to operate close to shore to do their jobs, like amphibs. |
