One hundred years after this famous battle, we played an historical re-run in Great War Spearhead II. Read the After Action Report and see the photos here: link Robert |

WW1 1914, that's exactly the year I most enjoy gaming in WW1, not a big trench warfare fan. Nice looking game! |

Great looking game. I don't even like SH, but I'd play in that game. - Ix |

Thank you for the kind comments. Much appreciated! The team did a great job in getting the board set up. The work we had done on the First Battle of the Marne paid off, as the sequencing for setting up and taking down such a table has become more familiar. There was a dry-run on the Saturday, where the Hexon terrain was set up on the floor. Only one contour layer was put down though. On the day, we had to adjust the second and third contours slightly. The actual contours are traced onto a graphical representation of Hexon-covered terrain board, using a computer drawing package. Individual hexes are then subtracted if there is no contour present for that hex or if less than 50% of the hex is covered. Occasionally this 'algorithm' will see a hex from a higher contour sitting over the hex on the edge of a lower contour. This creates quite a cliff. The phenomenon was common with the First Battle of the Marne, where the river valleys were so steep. The double-height sloping hexes were very effective in giving the correct slope for the terrain mat. For First Ypres, we had to make a half dozen minor changes as we layered on the second and third contours. Lesson learned… Robert |

There are some more photographs about a quarter of the way down Lee's Blog on SELWG, including a nice close up of the Baccus early war Germans: link Robert |
