Apparently, we have a Battleship Gap!!!

The Swedes are using "Battleships" in their search for the intruding Russian submarine:

"Sweden has said it could use force against a suspected Russian submarine that is believed to have violated its borders on the Baltic Sea less than 30 miles (50 km) from Stockholm.

The supreme commander general Sverker Goeranson warned he was poised to use "armed force, if necessary" to bring the mysterious object to surface, after days of fruitless search. More than 200 troops along with battleships, minesweepers and helicopters have scouted the area off the coasts of the Swedish capital looking for "foreign underwater activity".".

Quite frankly, I am shocked and outraged by this oversight by our national news media, and the apparent purposeful coverup being perpetrated against the American public, by our leadership.

It is a national disgrace, and I call for a full investigation as to how this could happen.

Clearly, we need to work quickly to redress the balance of power in "battleships", in order to protect our national sovereignty, and international commerce on the high seas, from the Swedish Viking hordes.

[figured you all might be able to use a chuckle, today]

It would seem that "Battleship" along with many other things have been redefined by our modern society.

I wonder what they would call and actual "Battleship" Probably "Wow, that thing is REALLY big!"

MajorB22 Oct 2014 2:02 p.m. PST

Mediaspeak:

"battleship" – any big military vessel

"tank" – any tracked military vehicle

Deadone22 Oct 2014 2:48 p.m. PST

Hilarious given the largest Swedish combat ships are a measly 600 tons!

Fonthill Hoser22 Oct 2014 3:03 p.m. PST

Mako, how old are you? From this post, I would guess 12.

Some people have no sense of humor………….

I for one welcome our Swedish overlords…especially their bikini team.

I will happily bow down at the feet of the Swedish bikini team… And I'm not too fond of heels digging into my back! :P

Besides, you don't want a battleship to go hunting for submarines, you want a frigate or a destroyer.

Space Ghost22 Oct 2014 6:59 p.m. PST

To your average person, any military boat that's not an obvious submarine or does not have a flat top, is probably a "battleship". Anything with flat top is an aircraft carrier.

I quite enjoyed the humor of the post. I found Fronthill Hoser's personal attack unwarranted, and unnecessary.

You know what? Space Ghost is right. My reponse to Mako11 was unwarranted. I apologize. I've been in a poor mood today, probably because of events in Ottawa today (my daughter goes to school there).
Again, apologies to Mako11.

Hoser

Mako1122 Oct 2014 9:56 p.m. PST

Thank you Hoser.

Apology accepted.

You, and your fellow countrymen (our cousins to the north), have my sincere sympathies, and I suspect those of the majority of other Americans, for the dastardly deeds perpetrated by that attacker.

Stay safe.

I remember squelching on that "Battleship" reference when I read the article a couple of days ago. I was going to comment then, but thought better of it. As ~Brian stated, "To your average person, any military boat that's not an obvious submarine or does not have a flat top, is probably a "battleship", and that is not going to change, ever…

But at 600 tons the Visby is still way out the range of "Battleship".

49mountain23 Oct 2014 9:56 a.m. PST

Hmmm…Swedish Battleships weight 600 tons. I've heard of pocket Battleships before. Could this be a coin purse Battleship? Or a key chain Battleship? The world wants to know…

Brian Bronson23 Oct 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

Perhaps they're using the Vasa ( link ) . At over 1200 tons, that could put it in the battleship category in the Swedish navy! grin

Jokes aside I suspect that it could be a bad machine translation of the word "stridsbåt" , the Amphibious regiment has been making extensive use of it's CB90's link

zoneofcontrol23 Oct 2014 8:04 p.m. PST

Maybe they are just using Hasbro's "Battleship" board game.

Mithmee26 Oct 2014 9:56 a.m. PST

Well to the media any armored vehicle is a "Tank".

So they see any ship as a "Battleship"

Lion – tell that to the Dreadnought, she did well enough sub hunting! Although that said, things have declined since then in the field of Battleship/submarine interactions in the favour of the subs :)

Im guessing Daniel has the correct answer….

Lion in the Stars27 Oct 2014 12:33 p.m. PST

If your battleship is hunting submarines, you have other issues with your fleet that you need to address.

If submarines are stupid enough to challenge a battleship on the surface, well, I guess the battlewagon's gunners should be allowed to paint kill rings or maybe silhouettes on the turret.

zardoz1957 Supporting Member of TMP27 Oct 2014 7:00 p.m. PST

I suspect it's just a inaccurate translation of "warship."

capncarp27 Oct 2014 7:41 p.m. PST

Pssst…Mako….
How is our mineshaft gap coming along???
