Brief appraisal of the film "Fury", as I saw it.
First third accurately claustrophobic.
Second third too long and off message anyway.
Last third somebody didn't want to send any pyrotechnics back to the armoury.
Overall, I liked it, especially the Bovvy Tiger.

Quite a few comments already from other TMP'ers

I'm more and more inclined not to bother watching it until I forget all these comments. That might take a while.

I might hunt out 'The Longest Day' instead. Best war film ever!

Two things I did like that have not been mentioned.
1) I thought it did a good job of showing how hard it is to hit a moving target.
2) it showed that armor actually works once in awhile and not every hit is catastrophic

Korvessa is right on .it is hard to hit a target thats moving /or you are moving and not every hit destroys / blows off the turret/ explodes the ammo.
I believe some armored forces had a doctine to keep shooting until the above was observed
Going to see this very soon

I loved it, warts and all. I think the Sherman should get best actor.

Disco Joe22 Oct 2014 6:38 p.m. PST

With the Tiger best supporting actor.

Sudwind22 Oct 2014 10:18 p.m. PST

I posted a blog article about the real star of the film:

Sudwind, that blog page is really hard to read because of the background picture and text blurring together at points. I gave up I'm affraid.

Saw it last night with a friend who spent years as a M1 Abrams tanker. He didn't scoff and we both enjoyed it. Solid if predictable plot. Did a fine job showing the muddy, cramped, ugly side of things. Certainly a good movie if not a great one. Thought there was less H-wood pyrotechnics than usual when it came to the battle scenes.

Ken Tout's book "Tank!" is well worth reading for a real view. Telegraph article here link
Good to see he's still alive and well.

His comment –
Although some veterans can be dismissive of the Hollywoodisation of the war, Ken broadly welcomes it.

"I'm certainly happy that it continues remembrance," he says. "There's so much happening in the world that unless someone like Brad Pitt comes up, people forget that this did happen, and that too many people didn't come back."

my wife wanted to know does it look like that when the machineguns fire? I told her No that's just Hollywood. when I heard the first Over&Out on the radio that was it for me. quite frankly what front line unit is going to worry about the Rear troops getting hit? REMFS!! save your men to fight another day.

Out of all these posts about the movie, none (including mine) asked if the final battle was based on a real incident. I know the Flames of War rule books throw in some stories of the troops in action that are fiction but well written. For all of you who have the main "Bolt Action" rule book, crack it open to page 129 in the "Top Secret" sidebar. There is an incident that mirrors what happened in "Fury". I have scoured my library and the Internet to verify if this really happened, but could find nothing. Has anybody else found corroboration of this incident that was used for "Fury"?

I also saw the short story in the BA rule book.
As soon as I read it…I thought…this sounds like Fury.
Not sure if the Bolt Action story was fiction as well.
