I understand these added a lot of drag and reduced performance. Did they add them to the Fw190 A-8/R2 and R8 versions and Bf109G-6 or was the combined weight of the 30mm cannons and armour too much? I have not found any references online of anything definite either way. Does anybody know either way? |

I think they are usually referred to as WGr-21 rockets, which were 210mms in diameter. My understanding is that the fighters could either have underwing rockets, or underwing gun gondolas, but not both, and yes, they created a lot of drag. Supposedly, the Mk 108 cannons fitted inside the wings were fairly light, as far as guns go, so it might have been possible. The bomber destroyers were pretty devastating to the bombers, as long as USAAC escorts weren't around, or they had decent topcover protection of their own. In a dogfight, they were sitting ducks. Can't recall if they were used on the 190A-8s, but they were used on earlier marks of the 190A. |

That is pretty much what I could glean from the internet. Fw190 A-8/R6 seem to have used WGr21s – but these didn't have the extra armour [R7] or 30mm cannons [R2] The R8 was the R2 and R7 combined. Correct me if I'm wrong. If they did use the rockets with either the R2 or R7 fit then I'm guessing there'd be a R number for it. It seems obvious the Bf109G-6 couldn't also carry the WGr21s due to drag and weight limits. |

The 109s did carry them, but didn't have the underwing cannons (and none in the outer wings, either, with the rockets, IIRC). I'm assuming that's what you meant, but just wanted to be sure. So, you can choose between gun tubs under the wings for it, or rocket launchers (one under each wing). |

Yeah – that's what I meant by the Bf109 G-6 but perhaps I'm wrong in assuming the G-6 always had the gondola 20mm under each wing. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. If you tried to put rockets on an uparmoured and 30mm armed Fw190 it'd be hopelessly compromised. |

"Over the Reich" (Fighting Wings game series) has a comprehensive breakdown of loads. The game series is generally a more reliable reference than books on the subject. |
