Lest we forget. I lived next door to a colonel in the USAF, as a kid, who flew missions over Germany as a tail gunner in a B-17. Apparently, on one mission, he was badly wounded, but survived. I now wish I had asked him about his time during the war, and/or asked his kids, who were my age. I suspect he would have a lot of stories to tell. Glad to see the guy in the story final got the recognition deserved. |

A piece of paper does not an honorable man make. I believe he earned that distinction some 70 years back. And… by the sound of it, kept on going ever since. Glad he finally received the formal recognition for what he did. Hope he gets a bunch more years to keep it up. Congtats to him! |

A friend of mine's late father was a navigator on a B-24 flying out of the Mediterranean. They often bombed the rail yards of Vienna. After the war he visited Vienna and met a local guy who had been an AAA gunner. |

One of our history teachers had been a Lancaster tail gunner during WW2. It was easy to get him sidetracked onto his experiences, which is probably why I failed O-level history! Another of the teachers had been in the Fleet Air Arm flying Swordfish our of North Africa to attack Axis shipping in the Med. He was interesting to listen to as well. Thanks to all of them and congrats to him for getting his DFC at last. |
