Can someone please tell me what Size Bits there using and where I can find them ?

Chortle Fezian22 Oct 2014 8:00 a.m. PST

I bought mine "back in the day" along with a pin vice. Way back then there were hardware shops. You can buy drill bits on ebay:

auction

Mine are about 1mm.

If you replace your masts with wire (much sturdier!), buy the wire first, then buy "wire gauge" drill bits to match each wire size for a couple bucks each at a hardware store. Drilling white metal will dull the bits quickly, so you should buy a few of each size.

If you're using the cast masts, I don't have any experience with Langtons (yet) to help you. Sorry.

My experience with other manufacturers has been that each casting is different and the pegs at the bottom aren't a consistent diameter anyway. I usually just experiment with hole sizes and filing the mast pegs until I get a good fit, then glue them in with gap-filling CA glue to make sure they don't come out again. You can get an idea what size drill bit to use by comparing the mast pegs to the drill bits before you buy them, but buy a range of sizes that bracket the size of the pegs and start with the smallest. Drill bits in a pin vise tend to bore out the hole slightly larger than the diameter of the bit, and oversize holes lead to dismounting or wobbling masts.

Hopefully somebody else will be able to answer your question with more "science" than "art".

Sorry I should have been a little more clear …. Drilling for the Rigging the holes for the masts are easy enough its on the hull that im wondering about most some of the models are very tiny and its hard to know where and what size bits

Msr. Emperor, try Micro Mark. Thats where I get all my small drill bits.

Hi! T.E.O.
if you go to Vol's Blog "A Miniatures Hobby Room" and look for "Rory's Guide to painting and rigging 1-1200 ships" parts ! to 3 it may help you. Part 4 is not on this blog. It has about adding rings to the hulls if you have no space for drilling. If you think the guide is a help and want the bit about the rings. P.M. me devsdoc at hotmail dot com and I will send the ring bit to you.

TEO,
According to the book Langton puts out, the drill sizes are .5 and .7 mm. Like ACWBill, I get mine from Micro Mark.

Despite what some may think of Warhammer Historical's Trafalgar rules, there is a good section in the back of that book that discusses rigging, and more importantly for the OP, how and where to drill.

devsdoc23 Oct 2014 8:56 a.m. PST

Sgtprylo,
I'm on your side here, but for going forward onto running rigging you need (Must have) Langton's book.
The rules are O.K. to play too.

devsdoc,

Yes, if you are going that far. I don't happen to do that. I have the Langton book as well, and its very comprehensive.

devsdoc23 Oct 2014 12:32 p.m. PST

Sgtprylo,
If you can follow "Trafalgar" you can follow "Langton's". It's 1 to 2, 2 to 3 etc. Have a go!

Sorry you had to go around the houses to get the info. I'm so bad at tech stuff. Vol is ton's better at that stuff, He is my main man and friend for I.T. stuff and bouncing ideas on model ships. I cannot get a simple photo up on this site. I will always try and help, I just cannot do it here, because I'm a quill and ink man. Good luck with the work, P.M. me if you need too.

If you go to Vol's blog "A Miniatures Hobby Room" you can see my guide to painting and rigging 1-1200 scale ships. It is in 3 parts. Each part has a photo of each point of doing the work.
Part 4 will be coming soon "Extra bits"

What a great idea Vol!!!

Not my idea Julian! This is Rory's method. I am just posting it on my blog for him.

Hi All,
I hope the above will help you all with working with model ships. It will show you what or what not to do with them. I must thank Vol for his help and giving me a kick into doing this. All the bad bits are of my making not Vol's.
Again Thank you, Vol for making my work look so good.
