Anyone out there know who makes oxen that are useful for draft animals and won't break the budget? I am assembling a number of carts and wagons for a Roman baggage train, but the animals seem almost impossible to find.

Contact Old Glory – they would be the same oxen used with the Blue Moon Wagon and cart range.

I have a bunch of Old Glory oxen from their Old West covered wagons.
They get trotted out all the time. They are very nice.
If Joel says you can get them separately, well he would know.

Yes Front Rank are very good; large and plump. I use them a lot:

Thanks all! I have some of the 4Ground Roman Ox carts, but they weren't being offered with oxen when I acquired them.

I'll check in with Old Glory.

I don't know how big a seller it might be, but I would think that having a hard plastic set of draft animals might be a useful addition to any range. Oxen, mules, horses, all without any harness, or just a basic harness might be right handy.

Pegasus Hobbies makes a nice set of hard plastic draft oxen in 1/48th scale.

They are slightly bigger than the 28mm white metal oxen by Dixon and Eureka, but they do fit in well on the table top.

This kit includes four multi-part plastic oxen (two teams of two animals). Simple assembly: two body halves and a separate pieces providing the horns and ears.

The big advantage is they are much lighter than white metal figures. Also, quite inexpensive for a useful set.

The human figures in 1/48 may be a bit too large to fit in with 28mm figures, but the oxen figures, the cart, and the work table in the kit match up well with 28mm.

Thanks! I have no problem using 1/48 buildings, carts, etc with the 1/56 minis. In fact, I'd rather have the larger than smaller size buildings, but that's just a personal thing.

I appreciate the note on the Pegasus kit.

I use Irregular miniatures oxen for towing artillery.

Mirliton has a number of oxen. Haven't seen them myself.

They might also have a carroccio, like the Perrys do:
