I downloaded a free Kindle book, A Timeline of Byzantine History. It was a quick read and may impel me to re-read Norwich's trilogy of the Byzantine Empire. But early on the timeline said that Constantine had his rival Licinius, that man's son and his wife put to death. I know Licinius and his son were executed on the order of Constantine, but he spared the wife, his sister. Not a big screw-up, but when a book starts with an error like that it makes me suspect the rest of the information, which I might not know off the top of my head. I used the online Catholic Encyclopedia to check on the executions. It is well-researched and well-written. Constantine was an executing fellow, had his son by his first marriage slain and then his second wife when his mother said the wife had falsely accused the son. Nice guy, a real saint. |

Vincent, the Norwich Trilogy is wonderful, its very accurate history and marvellously detailed but his writing flows like a novel. Recommended. |

I own it, thinking of reading it again. And his history of Venice. |
