Immortal Memory……..I've forgotten………I thought Waterloo was fought on 18th June. Was there another battle? and didn't Collingwood, not the chap up the column, actually win the earlier battle, fought in the square just in front of the National Gallery? and you cannot splice the mainbrace till the sun is over the yardarm. |

Reminds me of an essay set for A level history 40 years ago. (A subject I did not study to that level, but have ever since!). "Nelson contributed more to the downfall of Napoleon, than did Wellington". To this day I still wonder. I think both could have said "It would not have done, had I not been there". But Nelson had able subordinates and a first class service to command. Wellington was…to some degree….in a side show theatre till 1815. But without him could Britain have maintained that army and, so, the will to fight? |

Nelson was killed early in the battle. It was a Geordie what won it! |
