Got together with a friend this weekend, and fought Tazewell on a 4'x4' table, using 15mm figures, and the Regimental Fire and Fury rules set. Tazewell was a small battle/skirmish between two brigades in the Cumberland gap. The scenario is available from a book of 10 regimental level western theater scenarios, Rebel Yell, Yankee Hurrah at link More photos, description, and a scenario review (spoiler: it's a great one!) on my blog. link

what an excellent battle report ….cant believe I missed it the first time around!! I have the scenario book this particular little gem comes from …a most excellent resource! have you tried any scenario's from the other books in the series …in particular "Kirby smith's confederacy"? |

Why thank you, sir-glad you enjoyed it. We are planning to do Iuka this spring, assuming I can ever work up the ambition necessary to paint another regiment of cavalry/mounted rifles. Iuka is also from Rebel Yell, Yankee Hurrah. I wanted to do Sugar Creek, from the Kirby Smith book, but my regular opponent has flatly stated that he doesn't plan to ever paint more Union cavalry, and he doesn't currently have enough for that particular scenario. |

Iuka is a battle me and my regular opponent are going to game soon. We have sufficient Rebs, and I think we must only be a Regiment or two short of the Federal order of battle? As well as 'Rebel Yell, Yankee Hurrah' I also have at my disposal Peter Cozzens' superb work 'Darkest Days of the war; the Battles of Iuka and Corinth'. An excellent and most informative book, definitely recommended! The amount of Cavalry, both mounted and dismounted required for most actions in the Trans-Mississippi does make collecting the right armies somewhat daunting to be fair. |

Thanks for the book recommendation! Ordered. That should give me the inspiration (AKA kick in the pants) to paint all the necessary cavalry stands. And dismounted stands. And horse holder stands. Grumble. :) And thanks for taking the time to comment on this post in the first place. Very kind of you to show an interest. |

My pleasure …for both the book recommendation and taking a few moments to post a comment. According to my opponent I have volunteered to purchase the necessary Union Cavalry, mounted/dismounted and horse holders for the Iuka scenario …I replied cool as long as you paint 'em! 'Darkest Days of the war' is a very good read, containing enough information to inform the scenario set up for Iuka, Corinth and the action at Hatchie's bridge. |

Haha! I think you got the better end of that deal. |

Excellent report. Thanks for including comments that helped one to understand the mechanics of the game. |

Haha you're not wrong there! Vast majority of my collection is '1st Corps' (with a smattering of Old Glory and the odd Dixon or two?), so I'll either go with them or maybe try some Perry Plastics? Just purchased 'Guns at Gettysburg' the ACW variant of 'General de Brigade' ….Tazewell will have to be the first scenario to road-test them with! |
ArkieGamer | 01 Feb 2015 9:28 a.m. PST |
Thank you, Mr. Winser54-I'm glad you found it useful! GOB, I've not tried Guns at Gettyburgh, though I do own General de Brigade and British Grenadier. It would be interesting to compare Tazewell results between systems. |
GoodOldRebel | 01 Feb 2015 4:55 p.m. PST |
I have used the original 'general de brigade' with a few modifications to fight a 'first day at Gettysburg' scenario with two Reb Brigades (Hays and Avery) vs Coster's single Union Brigade. Even without the ACW-specific rules to be found in Guns at Gettysburg, GdB gave a fun, easy game that allowed for bold advances, stoic withdrawls and was balanced enough that Coster's solitary Brigade gave a good account of itself! I will let you know how my Tazewell went |

Hi ArkieGamer, 3 February 2015 Nice toys and terrain and a great AAR! You mentioned Iuka, MS as your next game. The Regimental Fire & Fury Scenario Book, Volume I has Iuka in it. I've run it at two conventions and its a blast. Check it out at the F&F website: fireandfury.com You won't be disappointed. Best, Lowell D. Hamilton |
ArkieGamer | 03 Feb 2015 11:51 a.m. PST |
Thanks, Lowell. Glad you enjoyed the AAR. I DO need to pick up a copies of both of the RF&F scenario books. I guess I've been concerned that they're filled with scenarios requiring 200 or more stands per side, and I'm a long way from being able to field forces of those sizes. Are there other scenarios (like Iuka) that are on the smallish side? |
GoodOldRebel | 03 Feb 2015 3:25 p.m. PST |
ArkieGamer have you checked out Brad Butkovich's titles; 'Criminal Blunder: Wargames Scenarios for the Battle of Picketts Mill', 'The Road to Atlanta; Regimental Wargame Scenarios for the Atlanta Campaign May-June 1864', 'The River of Death: Regimental Wargame Scenarios for the Battle of Chickamauga' …all are excellent resources with variety of scenario's in them to suit most gamers collections? |
ArkieGamer | 04 Feb 2015 7:19 p.m. PST |
I do have the Chickamauga and Picketts Mill books, and they're fantastic. I haven't picked up Atlanta, yet. |
