…Korean soldiers in .military demarcation line.

"Border guards of the rival Koreas exchanged gunfire Sunday, October 19, 2014, along their heavily fortified border in the second such shootout in less than 10 days, South Korean officials said. Two shots believed to have been fired by those North Korean soldiers were found at a South Korean guard post and South Korean soldiers fired toward the North, the statement said.

The shootout occurred after South Korean soldiers broadcast warning and fired warning shots against about 10 North Korean soldiers who were approaching to the military demarcation line inside the Demilitarized Zone that bisects the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

South Korean defense officials say the North Korean soldiers returned to the North after the incident and they have been no reports of casualties…"

Does this pic remind anyone else of the old joke about the moon being full ….

Just another day on the "Z" … had two tours of the lovely place in '84 and '85. INF Bns of the 2ID rotated in and out every 2-3 months. Was considered a bit of a "hot spot" back. And it got pretty "warm" at times … Most back here in the states knew or cared little about what was going on that far from Main Street USA. But it really didn't matter. Anyway, we who served there after the actual "hot" war in '53, have been authorized a Korean Service Defense Metal now. Many years after the fact. I put in for it about a month ago. Based on what I've heard from other vets, I'll probably have to mail and fax the paperwork a few times to get any results. Not that is really matters … My uniform is way too small now … old fart … and I've been out of the ARMY since '90 and the USAR since '91 … But I may just continue this act of futility until one of the civilian paper pushers finally gets tired of me contacting them. And eventually do their job and sends it … evil grin

^^^ Nah, you are going to be one of those guys who gets that piece in the local paper about getting a medal 50+ years later, or when you are 80 years old.

"Border guards of the rival Koreas exchanged gunfire Sunday"

Would this have been from small arms? I thought that firing on the border would have been a case of hitting a button on a remote controlled machine gun. I didn't know that troops were actually exposed.

We were when I was there back in '84 & '85 … but that was a long time ago. The US turned over Warrior Base and Guard Posts along the Z in '90 or '91 ? To the ROKs …

Those in the photo are very exposed!.

Those in the pic are in Pan Mun Jon a very static situation that is not where the shooting usually occurs.

It sounds like either the nK patrol was lost and the warning shots did what they are supposed to do, or it was one of many patrols the nK army does to ensure the good guys are still awake in which case the warning shots did what they were supposed to.

There is still no peace in Korea it is just an armistice, this is just one of many reminders that Soldiers all arounf the world stand guard so that we may sleep peacefully in our beds at night.

Neither the police or military are appreciated until they aren't there.

As Col Scott said, that pic is from Pan Mun Jom. Where "peace talks" have been going in the vicinity since '53, IIRC. There is only a truce in Korea, no peace … Our patrols (US & ROK) ran recon and set up ambushes to stop Norks trying to infiltrate, etc. … The North-South border runs, IIRC, some 150 miles East-West to each side of the Korean Peninsula to the sea. Roughly along the 38th Parallel. More then once things got pretty hot while running night patrols. Even is you only strayed out of your patrol sector into the ROK's or vis versa. When I was there, there was no GPS …
