Took this old rule set out for a spin and found it still to be my preferred rule set for Cold War battles.

Harpoon 3 is very playable. Harpoon 4+ is H3 with more stuff layered on top until it becomes a mess.

Better ideas but horrible user interface.

As an aside H1 – H3 are the same rules, H3 (GDW) have a cleaner, nicer look but it's the same game. GDW did add the Falklands campaign, very nice and it even includes a very usable ground game, for Command Decision.

I am using is the 87 version of Harpoon from GDW. The naming conventions get mudded when you add in all of the computer versions of Harpoon as well.
