I'm currently painting a British Napoleonic foot artillery battery (Wargames Foundry). Some of the figures have their jackets unbuttoned. Most of these have just a shirt underneath their jackets but one is wearing a waistcoat.

You would have thought that it would be easy to find information on something as basic as the RA waistcoat but despite some searching, I've have not been able to find either an illustration or a written description. I figure it must have had white metal buttons and have been of either blue or white cloth but which! (The picture on the Foundry web site suggests white but is this correct?) I was hoping the knowledgeable members of TMP might be able to help?

The waistcoat was white with the normal brass regimental buttons. There is evidence that both collar and cuffs were in the regimental facing of red though plain, all white ones were also apparently issued.

Artillerymen thank you and appropriate the answer should come from you! Supprised that you say the buttons would have been brass though since the ones on the jacket were in white metal.

My prime source is FL Franklin's wonderful book and brass buttons are the regimental pattern for the RA at the time. The pewter button was part of the uniform in the early period, but as of 1802 it was replaced by a brass button. The pewter button appears in a number of sources but I would trust Franklin. I have seen blue waistcoats in some sources as well but for dismounted troops white was more usual and the RA waistcoat was definitely white when the uniform included the open coat.

Many thanks again artilleryman. I'm going for a white waistcoat with pewter buttons, as my British army is early Napoleonic: Egypt 1801, Maida etc. I've somehow overlooked Franklin's artillery book, though I have his two British Army Uniforms ones; it's now on my must-buy list.
