I've returned to the hobby after being away for a few years. Here are some thoughts: link

'Amazon Miniatures had some nice animals and monsters, but they're gone too.'

Amazon went several years ago. The Garrison ranges that I took over – including S&S Range – have about 6 weeks or so left…

Vallejo Game Colour is probably your best best for paints as the colours are identical to the GW paints that you know.

I am also surprised and saddened that GW has neglected LOTR. I had expected a boost from the Hobbit films but the prices are prohibitive. I bought some items but only a few plastic sets and Goblin Town. Mirkwood Elves and Eagles are very good.

WAB was killed by GW. They did a new version and published a riulebook full of mistakes and incompatible with the library of army lists that the WAB team had built up over many years.

Have a look at Perry Medieval figures as a substitute for your LOTR and WAB habit. I don't know what to recommend with rules.

For LOTR I would take a look at Lion Rampant. Great rule system for Medieval skirmish and even has a basic fantasy army lists in the back. I will second what Mick in Switzerland stated at looking at Perry plastics. Another vote for the Vallejo Game Colors if you are looking to replace your old GW paints. WAB was killed by GW for reasons that still escape most of us. The only reason really was that GW did not think it was profitable and closed up the Warhammer Historical shop. There are still those of us that enjoy and continue to play the game. Some folks have moved to Hail Caesar as a replacement.

Regardless we do live in a golden age of miniature war gaming and for the most part a collector is spoiled for choice.

Actually it's Coat d'Arms paints that ARE the original Citadel paints.

One piece of good news having slept for those three years is that you missed all of the debates over DBA three. It's due to be released next week.

Good point about hoarding lead. Here in the UK. we lost Vendel then Renegade miniatures.

Welcome back to the hobby! Things have changed, but I'm not sure they've ever been better. It's a good time to return.

Shameless plug I know, but if your favorite blogs are gone, here's one you might like that's regularly updated: chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com

It's true that Mega Minis is gone, but if you're in a post-apoc/sci-fi mood Johnny is doing a kickstarter right now that's almost 30 figs for 30 bucks shipped! link
You'll be pleased to know that alot of affordable mini companies are still going strong. ERM, Black Tree Design (they're actually reliable now!!), EM4, etc.

For LoTR, the small upside is that if you look around, you can find some amazing deals on them. Hail Caesar is one way to go for an alternate ruleset, our club has adopted Kings of War as our big-battle 28mm fantasy game to cover the wide variety of fantasy type armies our members have. It has worked well for everything from Chaos Hordes to Clan War armies.

Welcome back!

I have many GW paints and they've held up over the years. I even have some paints in the old Armory bottles…basically first run GW paints from back in the early 90s. Still good though probably need to be watered down a bit. I don't like the new GW range. I'd recommend Foundry or Vallejo. Both are good products at a reasonable price. I'm slowly switching as I run out of GW paint.

Renegade is gone too? That stinks.

I'm going to guess that GW killed WAB because there are so many manufacturers of historical models (they would prefer if you HAVE to buy GW-made models).

I am pleased to see DBA is still going strong. Unfortunately, the only hobby shop in the town I moved to pretty much only plays Warhammer 40K.

Welcome back! It really is a great time for the hobby in spite of some of the losses you mention. I think you'll be blown away by some of the plastics available these days (Perry, Warlord, Victrix…), and you'll find Ancients are very well covered.

I once returned to the hobby after a ten year break and understand it can be a little confusing at first. Stick with it and keep us posted on what you begin working on. TMP is still a great resource.

GW's lame'o paint pot design was only surpassed by Humbrol pain tins. Designed self distruction. Some kind of crappy product design class action lawsuit is in order I say!

War and Conquest is a rules system that is similer to WAB
You have to purchase the basic rules set but army lists and supporting material is free on line

War & Conquest (by Rob Broom of GW Historicals) and Clash of Empires are the linear successors to WAB.

IMO, that style of GW lid was designed with "planned obsolescence" in mind! I've had lots of them, but alas, none remain.

Meanwhile, I still have two or three of the original Coat d' Arms-style still going strong.

I love Privateer, with Vallejo droppers creeping in in increasing numbers.
