I finally got around to selecting a batch of photos from this year's NavCon, which was last weekend (October 3-5). The vast majority of this year's events were either age of sail or twentieth century, with a noticeable gap in between. In past years ironclads and pre-dreadnoughts have been very prominently represented, but of course the organizers don't have any control over what the gamemasters choose to put on. In any case, there were plenty of visually impressive games spread over the three days of the con.

I didn't get pics of every game because I was pretty busy (running demos of my "Captains Bold" game nine times on Friday night and Saturday) but I got most of them. I don't have any official numbers, but it seemed a little busier than last year and there were 28 different events, not counting repeated games. I'm pretty sure this is the largest all-naval wargame convention in the world.

Enjoy the photos!

Great photos! Are the models in "Captains Bold" 1/1200? Langton? They look very nice, well executed modeling.

Thanks, dragon6. Those are 1:600 scale ships from my own Anglo-Dutch series:

Navcon is a cool little convention in a nice setting. I hope it keeps growing. I'll go back if I possibly can.

Ironically, all I spent money on was 1/300 aircraft miniatures. I happen to be ramping up a Korean Air War project in 1/300th scale right now, and I-94 Enterprises was set up as a vendor…

Navcon is not a big, bustling convention, but I thought it was really neat that since we're all naval gamers, there's an instant common bond. It's also nice that everyone already has a clue what to do in any game whether they've played it or not.

I would really like to bring a game next time. Something with 2-3 linked scenarios and some "staff exercise" aspects to it.

Excellent convention again this year.

Already looking forward to 2015

I see my buddy Mike was running a game or two. I'm sure everyone enjoyed themselves.

Great photos. Especially liked the game on the floor, Fletcher Pratt?

Couldn't see the NavCon album, but was able to click on the gray rectangles it contained and view the images individually. Strange, as I never had that problem before with Flicker.

Nice images.

Just splendid. I did so want to go but was just too worn out and behind on life. Next year for sure!

Thanks Jeff.

Thank you so much for the pictures and writeup. I had such high hopes for this year, including finally getting to this. However, the Year of Disasters continues relentlessly.

I wish I did not have that big pond in the way of getting to the show. Glad it was a good one

Did anyone do any Russo-Japanese War games?

Great photos. Especially liked the game on the floor, Fletcher Pratt?

Yes, it was Fletcher Pratt. Not sure if they have modified the rules or not.

Did anyone do any Russo-Japanese War games?

Not this year. Most years there are pre-Dreadnought games, this year we we're not that lucky. With the exception of the Battle of Memphis and some WWI air-games it was Age of Sail or WWII.

I'll have to see about doing Rozhestvensky v. Channel Fleet assuming the Dogger Bank outrage lead to war….

Does anybody ever play unmodified rules?

I'll fly 2000 miles for that game. :-)

Heck, if you're doing it in 1/3000 or 1/2400 scale, I'll even paint a squadron for it.

Very nice pictures.

Wish I could have fit this into the schedule this year.

1/1200 ironclads?

Volleyfire18 Oct 2014 12:25 p.m. PST

I like the idea of painting the ships names in their wake, and the shape of the bases, original and effective.

1/1200 ironclads?

I think so. They were scratchbuilt, I believe, by gamemaster Darrell Hartsig.

I like the idea of painting the ships names in their wake, and the shape of the bases, original and effective.

That was the first trial of the "ovoid" basing system by gamemaster and rules designer Jeff Nichols – a very creative guy. He told me after the game that overall he was quite pleased with the effect.

I'll have to see about doing Rozhestvensky v. Channel Fleet

If you're serious about his, keep in mind that I have a box of Viking Forge 1:2400 Russians that you can use:

I like the rigging on those 1/2400 Russian ships. It dresses them up nicely.

I own much of the Russian Tsushima and Port Aruther fleets already painted in 1/3000, more of it still awaiting paint, and have a shopping list of what I need to order to complete it. To match them, I have nearly every British battleship ever built from 1880 to 1905 unpainted in 1/3000, and a lot of the cruisers (also Navwar), and again a shopping list of what's missing. Unless someone conscripts me into a fun collaborative project (sic), I may never paint any of them, now that WTJ is doing such nice miniatures in 1/2400.

Man, I wish this event was a little closer to the East coast. I'd love to attend.

I live in California, so it's 2200 miles away from me. But I may go back annually now. Fun!

Pratt on the floor with 1/1200, the only way to go! I enjoy putting the games on. Did a big Slamma-Jamma this time: 6 US BBs against 6 IJN BBs. Excellent slugfest.
