Hey TMP, I've been attracted to the AWI period, as i'm interested in the history and I don't have a musket period done yet outside of M&T for FIW. I'm very new to the period, and I'm wondering if the era can be done almost all in plastic for 28mm? it seems that between the Perry sets and the WGF sets it's covered. this would help me 'buy in' because for me plastic is generally cheaper, easy to assemble, and easy to paint. also, if anyone has some general advice for starting the AWI period, please share with me. thanks so much! -Stew |

I have seen no artillery or cavalry in plastic, but I could be wrong. And may I humbly suggest this. TMP link It is my helpful hints for getting started. Some seem to like it. |

Get the Rebellion supplement for Black Powder. Even if you don't do Black Powder it is a brilliant primer on stuff. I'd also try to get my hands on the Mollo book if I didn't have it. |

No arty, no cav, no Hessians, no French. Can't think of any Indians either, but I may be wrong. On the plus side these are usually small/specialized units so if you buy metal it won't be that drastic. |

Great list but it's not 28 mm as the original poster asked for. You will also need Highlanders if you plan to do Southerb Campaigns. |

Wargames Factory has a set of Indians in the works but no release date yet. These will be hard plastic and 28mm same as their other AWI sets. WGF and Perry go together well except WGF Brits are in 1768 Warrant uniforms and Perry in uniforms modified for field operations. |

Stew There is no period that can be done totally in plastics. Tooling costs prohibit seeing releases of smaller units. If cost is a concern then look at Old Glory. Some think sculpts are hideous, but they are easy to paint, don't need assembly, and look decent for wargaming once painted. Most important, their AWI range is complete except for the limited selection of Brits in campaign dress. |

No, and it cannot be done almost all in metal either. The reality is that until some company puts out a decent and relatively complete Spanish range, it is difficult to do the American Revolution in plastic or metal. Rick |

Good thing though with this war of rebellious colonials is that you needn't break the bank buying metal artillery and casvaslry as you don't need many of either. Sure hat have got plastic Prussians on the cards who will paint up as Hessians. |

I missed the 28mm part as well. You are pretty well served in 1/72, but in 28mm, no way. |

+1 OFM's TMP link +1 Black Powder Rebellion Supplement +1 Mollo uniform book also Although not 28mm, Bunkermeister has summed up 1/72 well. I am trying this route myself. Not all poses are equally useful, but it is possible. I would recommend adding Fusiliers by Mark Urban to your reading list. |

thanks for the info everyone. so i went ahead and ordered the Rebellion supplement for BP, and then went ahead and ordered BP as well because what the hell. I have HC and like it a lot so i'm betting I will like BP as well. i don't know enough about the period to know what campaign to focus on. I would like to follow Washington around but that might be too generic. 1776 onwards. as for plastics, i don't mind if the artillery or cavalry is in metal, because I know that I won't need a lot of it, or even a few allies. What I was more concerned about is the basic troops that make up the vast majority of the army. it seems the answer is yes, which is nice. though the boxes are a little intimidating because they offer so many options. I'll do more reading of Rebellion before I go any further. the game land of the free also looks good. i think some guys in my new game club that i haven't been to have guns of liberty. thanks again! -Stew |

Stew, The Black Powder AWI supplement is indeed a good investment. Not only for a concise guide to the war, the organisation of each side and uniform guide but also the 20 scenarios to game. I will let others comment on campaigns, as I generally do standalone scenarios rather than campaigns. Happy to game any part of the AWI, but do rather like the Southern Campaign. I can't pin down exactly why, think it may be that I see it as a bit less 'formal' (for want of a better word) than the campaigns further north. Ezza |

I have been switching to Perry and Foundry figs. I have some OG figs, FR figs and Battle Honors. But I am phasing those out in favor of Perry and Foundry. I only buy OG and FR now if I cannot find what I want from Perry and Foundry. I just do not care for OG's AWI line. Although I do like some of OG's other ranges. As for plastic I have a few Perry plastic figures but only because they haven't sculpt these particular figures in metal yet. I prefer metal but will buy plastic if needed. |

SO I've read BP and I do like the rules, now on to the AWI supplement. I'm also interested in Land of the Free. now to find someone to do AWI with so we can each pick a side, so we get gaming quickly. |
