"History has released the first cast photo from their historical series SONS OF LIBERTY which will revolve around a defiant and radical group of young men – Sam Adams (Ben Barnes), a natural born leader, John Adams (Henry Thomas), a lawyer and Sam's conservative, smart cousin, Paul Revere (Michael Raymond James),a veteran who wholeheartedly joins forces with Sam Adams, John Hancock (Rafe Spall), the wealthiest man in Boston at the time, and Joseph Warren (Ryan Eggold), a doctor and man of conscience and integrity, – as they band together in secrecy to change the course of history and make America a nation" From Hollywood Spy.

That looks truly dreadful, but I am going to watch the first episode. Perhaps BBC America should do one from the Royalist side of things. |

I wonder how many hand-to-hand combats they'll get in. I would like at least one horse chase. Maybe an explosion or two… |
John the OFM | 11 Oct 2014 8:17 p.m. PST |
Oh dear… Can I expect every cart to explode halfway down as it falls off a cliff? Ya know… This is the kind of that makes the Horrywood moguls say "We try to give them historical , and they don't appreciate it." But "Paint it Black" and the Boston Tea Party? John 11:35 |

THIS is the "Sons of Liberty". YouTube link Ad it has cute girls for the young patriot boys! (I remember nailing the plastic coins from Armor Hot Dogs to the lid of my toy chest…) And THIS is Doctor Warren! YouTube link |

I sense a grave disturbance in the force, and thousands of historical reenactors and historians crying out in anguish. Honestly, how can they get away with calling themselves the History Channel anyway?! If they are going to make a bunch of crap up please leave the real historical people alone. This one looks like it is going to make "The Patriot" look like a PBS documentary. |

I hope it has a lot of flash and bang to catch the younger generations eye. Cause once they are hooked they will research it like we did. Paul Revere. Not sure why history has been so kind to this guy… On his midnight ride he got caught. then when given command during the war. He messed that up and got court martialed. As the article linked below says, the AWI is a hot item right now. So why not enjoy it while we can. link |
WarWizard | 12 Oct 2014 5:27 a.m. PST |
Rolling Stones background music? Large explosions? It can't be as bad as it looks, can it? |
spontoon | 12 Oct 2014 10:35 a.m. PST |
Well, is it not a change from their usual fare of " Hillbilly donkey Bonkers"? As for how Paul Revere got remembered by "history", his name rhymed better for the poem. It was hard to work the metre and rhyme scheme to " Listen children and you will hear, of the Midnight ride of Israel Ablamowicz". |
Redcoat 55 | 12 Oct 2014 11:39 a.m. PST |
Paul Revere was very important to the early revolutionary movement. He had contacts among all social classes in Boston Society. While he may be worthy of criticism as a leader of artillery during the war he was hardly a thug. The trailer suggests they are going to try to make General Thomas Gage look like General James Grant may have wanted to given the chance to be in his place, or Lt. Colonel Tarleton on steroids and crack. |
Redcoat 55 | 12 Oct 2014 11:45 a.m. PST |
I just read the article Ironwolf posted. It reads: "Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings) is cast as the ferocious General Thomas Gage, who is sent to handle the unrest in Boston with a military response." Yes, that is always the word that comes to mind when I think of General Gage…ferocious. :) Ferocious General Gage telling the soldiers to accommodate Boston's children when the military inadvertently messed up their sledding hill. It looks like they are going to be having him hang everyone in sight, although maybe I am judging too soon. It is only a trailer. One can only hope. :) |

Doubt if it will get any better. I am crying already and it's only the trailer. Cringe…cringe…..oh heaven help us !!!!! |

Ahhh yes John OFM. I have the Disney video. I actually got my love for history from the historical Disney movies that were put out when I was young and transferred them to miniatures as the Marx Plat Sets came out at a similar time. |

I will give it a look. Perhaps the low expectations the trailer gives me will make it palatable. |

spontoon – "Listen children and you will hear, of the Midnight ride of Israel Ablamowicz". hahahah, good point.
Redcoat55 – "While he may be worthy of criticism as a leader of artillery during the war he was hardly a thug. uummm, no one said he was a thug. But he was caught during his famous midnight ride. Denied a Continental Army commission in 1776. His poor leadership as commander of Massachusetts Artillery Regiment border on malfeasance. His conducted during the Penobscot Expedition in 1779 showed what kind of man he truly was. Which is why I asked why history has been kind to him. Which Spontoon summed up very clearly in his post. lol I compare this tv show to what they did with cowboy shows in the 50's & 60's. Those shows got me interested in the old west even though they were way off and not true. So if the music and explosions brings new people to be interested in the AWI. Then the more the better. Besides, tv and movies are made for entertainment not education. So bring on the AWI entertainment! lol |

"We try to give them historical Bleeped text, and they don't appreciate it." Unfortunately Hollywood moguls and writers tend to confuse HISTORY with historical settings and costumes. I think the best that be hoped is that they are relatively close to history, and will encourage viewers to learn more. |
ROBemis | 14 Oct 2014 5:34 p.m. PST |
The guy on the left….Sam Adams?…who knows. He has obviously never held a musket before this shoot. This is going to be just as bad as "Turn." Fun Fact: As I occasionally do film work, I have it from the source that all the white wigs and facings on Turn were done that way as the production designer "sees the British that way." It's 1 badly informed woman's hangup. A hangup I can't get past. |

Looks pretty good to me.I'll take anything remotely historical at this point.A lot of people don't like Turn and Black Sails but I do and think they will be better in their second seasons. Mark |
HANS GRUBER | 28 Jan 2015 5:46 a.m. PST |
That was really bad. I can't pick out the low point. Perhaps Gage killing Warren (by shooting him in the back)? I suppose it was justified because Warren had an affair with Gage's wife? |
Der Alte Fritz | 28 Jan 2015 10:05 a.m. PST |
Yes, this was a really bad movie. I didn't like the first part, I was starting to warm up to it in the second part, but part 3 was gawd awful. I didn't know that General Gage led the whole British navy into New York harbor and that Washington led a charge of his army right into the navy guns. Huh? |
mashrewba | 28 Jan 2015 10:42 a.m. PST |
Is this something to do with Assassins Creed? This is a great historical resource and I have no reason to doubt it's accuracy. In fact never mind the round hats and cut down coats my chaps are going to get brand new SS cammo smocks and we'll get some atrocities on. |
DWilliams | 28 Jan 2015 10:42 a.m. PST |
I tried to keep an open mind watching the first episode of SOL … then had to change the channel after the first 30 minutes. Otherwise, I'd have kicked the TV through the wall. Pure drivel. Absolutely awful depiction of American history complete with 'heartless arrogant British' and 'heroic crafty and clever Americans' stereotypes. |
dave001776 | 28 Jan 2015 11:58 a.m. PST |
sounds like the makers could have done with some advice from Mr Gibson, an expert on history and very reasonable with his portrayal of us Brits !! |

Artistic liscense to historical events is putting it lightly. My wife came in at one point and said: "You're still watching this?" I said: " It's like a train wreck, you cannot help but look it's so bad." I did kind of link the representation of Hankock, although ofcourse they did have to get the dig in about "evil" rich people. |
