A new skirmish rules for pre-gunpowder historical periods or fantasy settings.

Second Thunder has a new set of rules for pre-gunpowder and fantasy miniatures. The game's called Open Combat.

Just picked these up. Look interesting. Trying them on Thursday night.

I know one thing I'd like is some context for how good a value is. Like, what is the combat value of say a fresh recruit vs a veteran? what's the average toughness of a human? And, so on.

actually, is there anywhere that has generic unit profiles?

I know making your own is half the fun, but it would be nice to have rough guide lines on what "average" could be.

It would be nice to see a preview of sorts to see what this has over, say, A Song of Blades & Heroes. SBH is my go to skirmish game right now and it would be hard to supplant.

it's got a similar fumble system to it, but they're a bit different at the moment.

one thing I think is neat from skimming through the book is the psychological attacks.

You can taunt a guy to come over to you, or you can enrage someone to give them a STR boost, but at a DEF penalty.

which is kind of neat if you min/max a strong, but weak minded(mind is a stat in this game) will be vulnerable to a more strong minded opponent. So a crafty fighter could potentially just distract the big guy and locking him down.

SBH has the advantage of having a smorgasbord of supplements to customize your game to your liking.
