I need to paint approx. 150 18mm British Napoleonic's…Im not really going for historical accuracy other then the proper colors in the proper areas, not singling out any one company or regiment. I normally undercoat with a brown spray for anything from ACW, Moderns to Zombie Survivors. I think its much more forgiving when you look at it from arms length, then say white or even black. Brown just seems like a good color to blend everything together if you were to miss a strap or a canteen cover. But now with the Brits uniform it seems the pants were often grey in color, I can save a step by undercoating with grey primer but that only takes care of the pants, not the deep areas of the coat folds or shadow of bags and straps were brown would… So what should I do Brown or Grey? |

Brown. You can paint almost anything over brown and get natural looking results. Grey requires much more work. |

I'd go with grey – should work as a good base for the white straps as well. |

+1 with the grey. After you get your colors on, a nice wash of something brownish will give you the "on campaign" look and blend any missed areas well enough. Best of luck! Cheers Ths |

Stepman, You haven't said whether they are intended for the Peninsula or Waterloo. For Waterloo the grey trousers would be right, for the Peninsula trousers would be a mix of white, various browns with the odd other colour mixed in including grey. For my British I've used two different methods – white undercoat with a wash of "Bestial Brown" before painting: link And more recently with a black undercoat, vallejo black-red and other colours for the jackets: link I'd bought the undercoated figures from eBay and couldn't be bothered to strip them. They came out very nicely but I don't think I've got the patience for doing lots of figures like this. I'd second using something like Army Painter to tie the colours together – the Spanish troops I've painted have had AP applied and it really improved them. Malc |

I'd try one of each and see which results you like better. The way I paint I prefer black undercoating as I feel it saves me more time bringing out details compared to what I would save priming grey just for the pants. |
