Hi Trojan Bunny,
There's not that much written/recorded on this !
I think the 3 man cell organisation was fundamental ("these are your comrades")…and that a 3 man fireteam can self-evacuate (carry off its own/one wounded) is an important factor for combat organisation.
Methinks this 'principle' is gonna be more important to organisation than all the theoretical TOEs. Although there would have been a theoretical 'Mainforce' organisation, the realities of operations as guerillas (eg being dispersed, attrition) means there would have been a lot of adhoc.
I think platoons sorta stayed together tho' (eg; a platoon commander is the minimum-grade 'officer') so administratively a platoon (one 'officer' and a few NCO's) is a basic building block.
I don't think 'larger squads would be more typical' they would often be more likely to be smaller or not at all.
However squads/cells might be bigger if NCOs(SQ Comd) are missing, (less leadership) or the platoon is being 'bulked out' with replacements for an action expecting heavy casualties.
For basing think perhaps in three man cells.
Organisation might be something like ;
HQ, 2IC(/Commissar), Pl Sgt ,
Pl medic, Pl scouts/sniper , Pl Porters.
3x SQ Comd, Rifles, RPG, LMG.
…with any of this missing (from attrition) at any given point. (eg; SQ Comd/Rifles, RPG, LMG.)
(…and /or with the addition of any attachments from weapons platoon of company ( Mortar, MMG, RCL ), /or weapons company of battalion, and/or recon /sapper/signals/supply from HQ company as tasked.)
I think also this flexibilty was used by the VC. Eg for ambushes grouped the three LMG into one squad , three RPG into a squad and the three rifles into a squad (or as lookouts).
The LVC organisation would be more Adhoc still, but essentially built around the same '3 man cell' principle. …and what weapons/ammo are available on the day.
is this useful ?
