I've been using an ancient pot of GW chestnut ink for many years now. I only use it for washing gold and have always really loved the results.

Sadly, it's time is finally about to come.

Can anyone give a recommendation for a wash you would use over gold? Brown ink doesn't work to my satisfaction; it seems to have to be chestnut?

Thanks for any advice.

you could try a sepia ink from the likes of FW Acrlic, I think they also do a chestnut. You would need to dilute it into another medium however.

I feel your pain. I'm down to the dregs of my last Bedab Black.

I think you'll find that Coat d'Arms 137 Ink Wash Chestnut is the original GW Chestnut Ink.

Hi

I had the exact same issue with my GW chestnut ink running out a few years ago.

I cannot say I found a replacement – and I tried a lot of different brands/washes/inks…

The 'Coat d'Arms 137 Ink Wash Chestnut' is definately NOT a replacement – it may appear to be so, go try it yourself – I purchased a bottle and it is a very different beast – it dries to a different shade – more brown than the original.

The 'thing' about the original GW chestnut wash is that it was actually quite a rich red/brown – many other products veer towards the brown.

I also think it was more stable – unlikely to be affected by further washes – other brands I have tried would 'run' when washed over.

The last ink I used was a Vallejo flesh ink which was the closest I have come.

Check feeBay. The old GW paints & inks come up once in a while. And sometimes the prices are cheaper than they are now…. ;-)

Thanks for the tips all, much appreciated.

That's strange since Coat d' Arms is the company that has the formulations that used to be Citadel colours. I suspect you might have had a problem with quality control.

Update. I went with the Liquitex Transparent Burnt Sienna.

VERY happy with it. It's thinner than the old GW stuff, but we all watered that down anyway.

Also, I very much like the bottle it comes in with the option to use the eye-dropper. It's comparatively expensive, but you get twice as much in the bottle and it'll last me 10 years at least.
